Actually you do build a relationship with the guy at the petrol station, a while back the UK had a fuel strike, I had been a regular at the local petrol station for years, knew staff very well, as a result I had fuel whenever I needed it, and he allowed the company I worked for to fill up their vehicles so we could keep our business going, so yeh building a relationship helps.
For me a better way to think about it is: there was a time when I would build relationships with the vendor from whom I purchased my fresh fruit and vegetables or the garage guy, or the guy I purchased car tires from. These days with the large grocery stores, box stores and self serve gasoline stations I'm more interested in developing relationships with my trash hauler, the guy who cuts my grass and plows my road in the winter and local convenience store manager. At least he'll special order beer for me and keep a few 6 packs in reserve. The plow guy makes sure I can get to the beer guy. The trash guy gets rid of the evidence. The circle of life.

That's a little different where I live. I have no idea who is at the petrol station nor do I ever talk to anyone when filling up my car.
Ah, pay at pump? If so the UK is heading that way as well, but my example was a few years back when paying and chatting to the attendant was normal practice.

So a mate of mine bought a 116613 last year from our local AD. It was his first ever 'good' watch.
In Feb this year he put himself on the waiting list for a Batman, knowing it would take a year to get.
Last Thursday he went in to buy a 28mm Datejust for his wife. Whilst there he asked about the New Pepsi. The AD asked which one he was more keen on - BLNR or BLRO. He said the Pepsi.
Dealer got it in for him and he collected it today.
He's been popping in every month or so, staying in touch and he got treated better than anyone I've heard of so far — 4 working days to get a new GMT Master.

I bought my first modern Rolex, an Explorer 1, in the summer. At the same time I put my name down for a Sub and got the call a couple of days ago.
While collecting today I said I was surprised at getting the call after 6 months as I thought it’d be a couple or three years. The chap (who was a great btw) simply said they get calls all day from London and other countries but for the most desired modes such as Subs, GMTs, Daytona’s etc, they prioritise existing customers who live locally. Even though I’d only made one prior purchase, I was now a known customer and as it’s my local AD, my name simply made it to the top.

My expectations were also based in years when I asked for a Submariner, mine took 3 weeks which was very very surprising, if you don't mind me asking whereabouts is your AD based?
AD is Mappin and Webb in York, UK and Ive got to say they're great. It's the only place I'll be going for new watches from now on.
