Rolex GMT 1675 vs. 16750 matte dial

Having owned both, I would recommended to be on the lookout for example of either one and buy based on condition - look for a nice dial, handset, insert and thick case.

The 16750 was under-appreciated for a time, but the price for a matte 16750 is now around the same as a matte 1675.

It's exactly what my approach is right now.

I wanted both, so tried to make them as different as possible (succeeded except for the similarly faded bezels...)

I'm also in the market for a GMT...(made the school boy error of trying on a batman at an AD last week 馃え) having trouble deciding between the 1675, 16750 or perhaps a more modern 16710... noticed this local 1675 on TRF, what's the general expert opinion on this piece? Worth the asking?

Dan, I have to say that you picked possibly the worst 1675 GMT example I have ever seen
Overpolished, check
Dial relumed, Check
Dial damage, Check
Hands relumed, Check.

I can go on but that one is horrendous. Keep looking.

Hahah!! Why oh why is vintage Rolex such a minefield!! Each reference has so many subtle and in the case above not so subtle things to take into consideration...

I highly suggest you not keep looking at the bottom dollar (it's cheaper for a reason) and look at offerings from top trustworthy vintage rolex dealers..hqmilton, springer (gmt guru), lunaroyster/Kirill, Michael Morgan/iconic watches ...ask a lot of questions and research while you look. If you want top condition it'll cost you..if you can make do with some concessions like not having the sharpest case etc you can save. IMO the dial is the most important since that's what you look at the most so make sure it's pristine. After that I think it's all preference in what you value.

If you're already leaning toward the transitional 16750 matte dial, I say go ahead and focus 100% on that reference...it's definitely a favorite of mine for many of the reasons listed above.
As another member mentioned, you should inquire about the handset for this particular model. For reasons I've never been clear about, the handset on this relatively short production (about 4 years, I believe) had a tendency to corrode. Apparently Rolex urged their AD's to reach out to their 16750 clientele in order to swap out the handset free of charge (I've heard this from a few reliable sources but do not know the veracity of the story). If the handset wasn't changed early in the game, it was done so when the watch came in for a service, at the owner's out-of-pock expense.

I'd either go full gilt 1675 (so beautiful) or a 16750 (quickset). If you are wearing the 1675 as a daily driver, its easy to keep the date set, but if you are rotating, it's a real pain.

Guys, help needed:
Long E matte dial looks great with hands that match patina. Bezel is to die for. Case was polished though.
The question is, does it look overpolished to death or is it acceptable ?!
I've been told dial/hands are original from 1968
Thanks!!

I never figured I was a Rolex sort of guy, but somehow I now have 4. All vintage-ish. I had the price/value discussion with myself a few times and ended up with two 16750s, one with a matte dial and one with the white gold marker surrounds. Not
exactly planned, but just happened. I love them both. The shiny one with the black bezel one was about U$6k ( one replacement hand) and the Pepsi was about U$7500 but it had been serviced by Rolex 8 mths before. Pepsi is my favourite of the pair.

Nice ones. The case on the one I posted up top doesn't look so thin compared to yours, but the edges have gone to the toilet :/

Poor pictures, hard to see any details on the dial/hands as far as matching. As for the case, it has had a bit of polish during its lifetime. And a very nice insert.. The question is are they asking top money for it, nothing wrong with a beater at the very right price.

The price will be right, at least to me since it is partly a trade. I'm planning on never selling it as the GMT has been a long long term grail. I would have preferred a watch with better lugs but to me dial and bezel are much more important.
Anyways, I've made an offer, I'll see where this ends up! Unless there is a general consensus here the lugs are crap and it shouldn't be touched 馃榾

The dial and the insert look fantastic!! Tough to tell from the photos regarding hands matching the dial, but they do look pretty good. If the case doesn't bother you then don't worry about it if everything else matches up. If you're not going to sell it you could always have the case restored if you wanted. Good luck with the offer, I'm sure this one wasn't cheap based on the insert alone!

Yes I've seen obscene prices for these fuchsia inserts. Price would be good for me, good amplitude but no jubilee...
Anyways, I'll let you guys know!

Here's my 16750 which I love but am thinking of replacing the Pepsi bezel for a new one. Rolex have said they are happy to do this and that I can keep the existing one (for a small surcharge). I just want to have a bezel which "pops" more than this one. I'm a bit of a newby and am wondering if the knowledgeable members of this forum would consider whether there is a downside to doing this?
