·I think it would be literally impossible to buy one at an AD, unless you have a stellar relationship with that AD. And then it will be a long matter of time.
I haven't heard of anyone requiring a deposit... besides the oddball story of a "well, buy something here and we'll see what we can do..." 🤮
I doubt they'd take your money. A normal AD is getting a couple a year, and you'll be the 3rd person that day who has come in (or called in) asking for one.
I put my name down at an AD that I have a decent purchasing & personal history with *the very day it was announced*, and I got it around 18 months later.
But hey, I don't want to be discouraging. Go in, start talking, build up a bit of a personal relationship. I mean, stop by from time to time to browse and then ask about what they've been getting. There's so such thing as a truly ordered "list". If they get one and someone drops out and you come to mind, you'll be next.
The previous model Daytona had a modified Zenith El Primero in it for over a decade. Up until this version Rolex never had an in-house automatic chronograph. Some of the manual winds didn’t have Rolex movements either if I remember.
The Daytona waiting period started with the Zenith version as Zenith only sold them a limited number of movements a year.
Forgive my ignorance but... wasn’t it Paul Newman who was famous for the Rolex Daytona?
Steve McQueen wore a sub and had ties to Heuer and the Monaco???

My brother just picked one up (see picture against my FOIS). He was 18 months waiting on the blue dial Sky-dweller going nowhere, so they cut him a deal to jump the line on a Daytona. Amazing looking watch.
Great watch! They probably allowed him to jump ship as they are having so much trouble getting the blue colour to take to the dial. Apparently will not be able to release any until March???
who waits that long for a watch !
How can you get into rolex if new customers are treated like a second class
?
I can imagine this is a very frustrating process, even more so when the gray market can be a process that doesnt seem on the level. Is it dumb in thinking that there might be some availability at certain boutiques when traveling abroad?
Seems that way with Omegas.
You could be lucky on some airports or at tourist places where it is difficult to work woth lists but to be honest, i dont think there is a chance you’ll find one in a window or on a shelf.
