Plated watches aren’t something that is really sought after at all, that happens to be one of the benefits in them. The more experienced collectors are often fighting for the same sought after pieces, all in preferable materials (18k > 14k > Steel > Gold cap > Gold filled > Gold plate) typically. That leads to the pricing on those preferred materials like gold and steel being higher and preferred models like Piepans and 321 Speedmasters being unsuitable for most beginners as there are too many pitfalls and too much money.

The nice thing about a lot of the ignored watches like a cal 752 Cosmic in gold plate is that you’re getting one of Omegas best vintage movements, in a decent water resistant (for the era) case, with a nice original dial and hands, and a steep discount over say a 751 Seamaster Sparkle chronometer in steel just because the gold plate and eccentric case turns many collectors off.

The watches I tend to post here I try to make a first good vintage watch, to service and wear daily to work. A $300 Geneve 601 in gold plate is the type of watch a young man or woman can afford straight out of university and pair with a well fitted suit to look respectable for the same money as a cheap Seiko or Apple Watch, and it’s a real Omega with a genuinely good movement that you can wear for 30 years with regular servicing, as long as you don’t go swimming with it.

So that’s the real target I try to keep for this thread, while there are some more expensive pieces if they’re interesting, the majority are cheap but good quality and worthy starting points for a collector to actually wear.

Thanks I get it.

I don’t want to wear gold or white gold

white gold would not be recogniseable for the majority of people and platinum dito. with both you can easily mimic steel...

As a collector, I’m looking for stainless steel and/or gold.

As a wearer, I’m looking for stainless steel or capped or plated. I don’t want gold, I don’t want to wear gold or white gold. I don’t want people to see me wearing gold.

Without wanting to criticise anyone’s choice or taste, I would find wearing a gold watch might say more about me than the watch.
My preference is generally for steel. I find solid gold too soft and I don't buy gold plated watches, but I think that gold capped watches can be a very good compromise. I have several that I'm very fond of that are nice dress pieces.

It’s worth mentioning btw that whole gold cap is still better than gold filled which is in turn better than gold plate, it is also true that vintage gold plate is a lot thicker than modern gold plate. It’s just also unfortunate that people didn’t have the sense to not polish it back then so many gold plate vintage watches have had their edges ruined.

If you find a good gold plate vintage watch and don’t polish it if scratch it badly, you’ll find it holds up far better than a modern one will.

I thought the title of this thread was to list recommended watches, not other topics 😀😀😀

I know you know a lot more than me and I am learninG. I would be concerned about the dial font but may be off - Is the o in officially ok, and the r in chronometer long ? Other r s are covered by hands?

The wonky os are ok, and I believe the angle of the pictures in combination with a mildly beat-up plexi does the rest. I’m +1 on absolutely original, just a tiny bit more doubtful about how well it’ll actually clean up. Looks like there are stains on the dial, especially around 3-5.

Are the hands correct though? I don’t think so.
Possibly. Omega made hands like this, but generally seen on Seamasters. Same is true with the crown.

Lots of weird Omega combinations came out of Norman Morris, Inc. in the late 1950’s.
