I messaged him back and told him it was either an old watch with a replacement movement and dial, or a newer watch which had an old case back on it, so he knows it's not correct.

i was thinking the same - under 2.5k and it might be a good buy for someone on the lookout for a DON and 66 case back - probably cheaper than trying to buy them separately.

A DON bezel in slightly better condition recently went for $855 on eBay, and a 145.012 caseback went for $743. So, you've got around $1500 in parts on this - could be a decent pickup in the low-2's if the seller plays ball
I'll fess, I bought that DON. I had about $75 in eBay bucks to use, so I factored that in to my bidding (bid price vs actual out of pocket). Got it a few days ago and it was actually in better condition in the metal than I expected. Even this pic of mine doesn't do it justice. f169fcd7aa3e148698c8d434bb99aa41.jpg

I believe it. It's quite scratched all around but nowhere so bad as to obscure any numbers. I don't think it was a bad pickup at all
