Patching a run flat? Advice needed...

So, my wife was out today getting some groceries, and about 5kms from home the light went on. I checked it and found this in the left rear:



We replaced these last fall, so not really wanting to replace it again (only 4400 kms on them). I checked the pressure to make sure she hadn't stressed the side walls too much - first test was 28.5 and the second was 27.5...



My gut tells me this is too close to the side wall to fix. Thoughts?

TBH I think your far enough from the side wall where it’s patchable but tough to tell from that view. I mean it’s not on the sidewall but I get your concern. If it’s your wife driving and you think it will cause you too much concern replace. If it was me driving I’d patch

That's a pretty big puncture. I am not sure who the OEM is for that tire, but I'd go to one of their branded dealers and ask them.

Of course if you bought the tire insurance, you'll get a new tire, no sweat. Tire insurance is by no means a scam, I've taken advantage of it a couple of times.

I’d think that is patchable. It’s not the side wall. It’s through the radial steel belt.
At the end of the day it’s up to the tire place.

I bet with that angle on the screw you are into a replacement tire.

Source of this?

This is consistent with everything I've read today on plugging these - has to be inside the outer grooves.

I had a serious spin in my old E46 caused by a previous patch that was professionally done by a tyre shop in the middle of the tread area failing at speed after around 5000kms, it was patched when the tyres were almost new a year ago but the combination of mileage and thermal cycles caused it too delaminate and when it did it ripped a two inch hole and blew out. The same tyre shop was like yea these things aren’t meant to last forever… not something they mentioned at the time

maybe get second hand tyre from ebay that has similar wear depth to your other side of the axil and replace it

In any case, back to @Archer : as much as it sucks, I would not chance it.

I have an F22 with run-flats and, given the road conditions in Michigan, I got the tire insurance when I bought the car three years ago. I've replaced two tires with it already, and it's worth it. My wife has driven BMWs since the 90s, and she's had punctures four or five times - she never got one patched. If it were me, I'd play it safe - these tires are more expensive than regular ones, but worth it if you can get the car to a garage.

Dude you got that set up at home. I am truly amazed and bow before you. There is so much I can do but don’t because I hate climbing under the car up on jacks. That is a thing of wonder, now I got that McCartney song “maybe I’m amazed” stuck in my head and may be developing feelings for you.
