Opinions about this Constellation? I have no idea what to look for.

Hello there! Could anyone help me to understand if this constellation is authentic and worth its price? I'm new to vintage watches in general, but I love the design of the Constellation and I'm in the market for a new dress watch. I like the sharp lugs, so I'd really love to get one.

Seller is asking for around $900 and that seems pretty alright after the research I was able to do. But I wasn't able to match a few numbers shown to other numbers. In all honesty I have no idea what I'm doing.

Any help is appreciated a lot.

Here are more, but I have no idea if these are better to draw a conclusion.

Thank you for trying to help!

Here's one to check against.

That's a different watch. 😕 The dial doesn't match. Is there a chance the backplate was swapped?

It's the same reference with a different dial variation. There are many variants for most references.

Sorry, the photos are just not good enough for me to give an opinion.

One quick question if you don't mind. Is the different crown a variant aswell?

Welcome @STiLLALiVE
It all rather depends on what you are looking for.

The case on this watch has been so polished that it has lost its purpose as a dogleg.
The crown is not a constellation crown.

A good condition dome dial dogleg is a thing of beauty but I would pass on this unless you can’t afford anything better.

In all honesty I have no idea what I'm doing.
There are good resources readily available here to provide basic knowledge. Until you have studied vintage Constellations more you really should not be considering buying one yet.

Great links above. The more you know the richer you’re buying experience, and the more likely you'll be satisfied with your informed choice. This would not be the one for me.

Collectors would gasp at the extent of polishing all over the case and lugs. The uninitiated might just consider it very shiny. To me it looks like it was polished 8 times for good luck, dipped in butter, polished some more, and then slathered in bacon grease.

Understood. Resisting the urge for now. I'm already reading through the links and compare various listings, trying to check for signs of authenticity. It's more difficult than I thought.

I'll still post the higher resolution pictures whenever I receive them to learn something from your takes on the dial.

Thanks everyone!

There are so many different references and dials it is a bit overwhelming.
Suggest that as you look at different examples on the threads make a note what you like and then narrow down to 1 or 2 references. Then focus research on those and know what to expect re dial, case, movement so you are up to snuff on those and you can evaluate watches as you see them.

Case: do you like dog leg or lyre lug? Steel or gold cap or solid gold?
Dial: dome dial or pie pan?
Date or no date?

Useful to check this thread daily to see EB listings vetted by OF mods many new members have made first purchase from this :

Take you time and stick around!
