While we’re at it, we could post up just about every quartz model watch that Omega ever made. Get enough of them together in the same room and you’ve got yourself the ugliest marine anchor ever conceived.

The entire “Quartz” era goes to quality (on top of being ugly as f... to boot).

In what way were these not quality watches, and can you give some specific examples of what you are referring to?

I guess that's the difference - I don't buy based on "the market" but what I actually like...

if you assume that's what every one does. . .that's what actually makes a "market". its the best reflection of everyone's preferences in total

In an ideal world you would be right, but the world is far from ideal...

That’s just painful, cruel and unnecessary! What a mouth breather.

like this entire thread...and for some reason I have yet to figure, most threads started by the OP...no offense meant, but they tend to sprawl out into the unsavory.

but yeah, Archie is a real gem 😀 Last I heard he is now a Rolex fanboy...

I think this is a topic that will be long debated but never truly settled. I am just starting off in building a collection and have been torn between both brands. While Rolex generally has the marketing hype over Omega, as of recent years of wait list and unreal gray market prices plaguing Rolex. I have shifted attention back to Omega. Also most omega wearers are knowledgeable about the watch they choose to wear. Rolex wearers not so much. While I still remain torn on which direction to take first, Omega seems to be more inviting and designed to be a tool watch , rather than simply a status piece. From the horology aspect i do feel omega does have the edge though

Personal taste.
I own 5 5 digit Rolex watches.
The newer maxi cases look out of proportion. The watches almost look square so I have lost all interest in their new stuff.
Omega on the other hand have innovated, improved their accuracy and introduced new materials (ceramic cases , Moonshine Gold) etc.
Their style ethos has balance.Just look at the new Constellation or Seamaster.
Wearing my old Rolexes gives me the same sensation of pride as wearing any of my old and new Omegas .

I often work with young people in a city where the median household income of $47K. Wearing a Rolex to work would emphasize the wealth gap between myself and the people with whom I work.

So one making 47K should not own a Rolex?

Sorry, I didn't mean to be proscriptive about who should own Rolex. What I mean to say is that Rolex so strongly communicates wealth and status to the average person that it can create a barrier between myself and others. If I'm meeting with someone and my watch costs as much as half a year's rent for their family, then I think it is likely to inhibit my ability to build a relationship with that person and get them to trust me. For better or worse, I don't have that concern when wearing an Omega. I'm sure that Omega would prefer that they had the brand recognition and status of Rolex, but, it's kept me from grabbing an Explorer I that I know I'd really enjoy on a personal level.
