Omega overshadowed by Rolex

Don’t mind Rolex, I like omega better myself
Sorry, I didn't mean to be proscriptive about who should own Rolex. What I mean to say is that Rolex so strongly communicates wealth and status to the average person that it can create a barrier between myself and others. If I'm meeting with someone and my watch costs as much as half a year's rent for their family, then I think it is likely to inhibit my ability to build a relationship with that person and get them to trust me. For better or worse, I don't have that concern when wearing an Omega. I'm sure that Omega would prefer that they had the brand recognition and status of Rolex, but, it's kept me from grabbing an Explorer I that I know I'd really enjoy on a personal level.
have you experienced that issue? I had 1 Rolex never got any comments on it. Haven’t received any compliments on my omegas. I have noticed people glancing at my watch occasionally actually the only watch anyone complimented is a movado vizio I have. Anyway I do like Rolex but I prefer omega. People can spend their money on whatever they wish but I don’t think Rolex is that much better than omega to justify the large price difference and hoops required to jump through to obtain one. Even buying the speedy I was thinking damn I could do some nice home improvements with this money.
Rolex has done an excellent job marketing. I’ve read that coke is one of the most (as in Coca-Cola I should say) recognizable English words in the world behind OK. Talk about great marketing. The Rolex name is up there in brands known across the world. I was going to post an article I read about it and I think they had it between 20-30 but don’t quote me on that. It’s a companies dream.

I would never kick a Rolex out of bed and I can see why people prefer them. They do make some beautiful watches, even the steel they use is beautiful, I forget the name of the steel but damn it looks nice. I’m going to stop talking about Rolex now it’s making me feel a certain way.

If I were to purchase a Rolex, the Datejust 41 would be my pick of the litter, but I respectfully disagree that it bests all competitors. Omega’s Globemaster can give the DJ a run for its money and then some. Omega’s METAS certified co-axial caliber 8900, display case back with Omega’s observatory medallion set into the sapphire, magnetic resistance to 15,000 gauss, scratch proof tungsten carbide bezel, quick set hour function and that gorgeous pie pan dial.

The Globemaster is a worthy contender but lacks the killer punch that would see it crowned champion. The movement, watch case and dial are all superb, but the bracelet and clasp are really where it falls down and in part why it's a contender and not the champ.

The steel Rolex uses is 904-L (L stands for low carbon).

I frequently get compliments on my Ti Planet Ocean 9300 - sometimes only once a week but other times it's up to 3x a week.

I've been wearing a Planet Ocean for a while, and it's attracted more compliments than my Explorer (which admittedly I got more recently). However, the Rolex has been the subject of a few snide remarks, whereas the Omega never is. I love both, but I generally wear my Omega anywhere I go and tend to choose the Rolex for less judgmental settings. 🤔

That said, most of this is in my head and I could easily wear the Rolex anywhere, too.

I find it's not unusual for someone to notice and comment on a watch i am wearing.
The difference is that;-
if it is an Omega it is normally another watch enthusiast who notices and wants to chat about it.
If it's a Rolex then it is more often someone who recognises the status symbol it is perceived to represent, knows little about the watch but wants one.

Make of that what you will. No judgement from me. I like what I like and wear what I like !

I have observed exactly the same! 👍

Always the same discussion, focused on the hardware, but during my spacefarers' lecture I take this a notch higher and talk about my experiences with the management & heritage teams of both makes...

Wow, I have not posted on the OF for ages, but surprise, surprise you can sure count on an Omega vs Rolex thread being active...and yes you can also place a safe bet that I will not resist the temptation to join in😀

From a product perspective there are some Omegas that will offer a superior product to Rolex and vice versa. If you buy pre-owned, well Omega will almost always give you significantly more value for money.

Which trio below is "superior"? You tell me...

If I had to reduce the collection to just four watches, I would keep the two Speedies, the Reverso and the Explorer. So Omega would "overshadow" Rolex (for me)😁

Ref Tudor vs Omega, I do think across much of their product ranges Omega do offer a superior product and Tudor is a bit of a one trick pony with the Black Bay variants.

However, I have to admit that the BB 58 chap below (photo courtesy Fratello) was quite disruptive when launched and perhaps could be considered a "superior" watch to the entry-level modern Omega Railmaster (pre-owned/grey pricing also around US$3K)?

My take is similar to various posters on this thread: buy what you like and enjoy it with your loved ones. Life is short😀

I think the lamb will hold its value better, but that could depend on how many beers you drink.

Great parallel to the Omega-Rolex debate. You get the pork, which is head and shoulders above the chicken and lamb. Just like A.LS, PP, etc. and often considered to be in a higher class than Omega and Rolex.

ALS brand equity has tanked in recent years (much as Omega's has). Nobody wants them, and they will sit unsold for ages in display cases.

Based on your avatar and the above post I can only assume that you were careful to not eat that fermented cabbage kebab before a vigorous team ascent?

But I go first. What happens behind me is not of my concern 😁
