sorry i have no sympathy for anyone that says i'll take a 5k speedy over a 100k daytona. . .yes you're entitled to your own.

The fact that you seem to believe someone needs your sympathy for having different preferences is odd...

What I find amusing is that people keep thinking that a purely subjective argument such as aesthetics can be "won", especially on a Internet 馃槈.

One of my colleagues at my main client who is "only" 32 furnishes her house like a geriatric but does so with pride. She listens to Sinatra and is very much an old soul. Do I find her furnishings ugly? Absolutely, but it's not my house so why should I care? I'm sure there are plenty of people who would try to convince her to change her aesthetic and convince her that it's "bad" but that says more about those people.

Is she single? 馃槦 lol

I think your point is well made. I have liked Omega's designs for much much longer than I've liked Rolex. In fact, for the longest time I thought Rolex made the ugliest watches around. I've warmed up to them now. But they do (nearly) all look much more alike than other brands are willing to chance with their collections.

I like both brands and have Omega and Rolex, but I will say that if I could only have one watch it would be my DJ41, it simply wins in a straight comparison with any of it's direct competitors.

If I were to purchase a Rolex, the Datejust 41 would be my pick of the litter, but I respectfully disagree that it bests all competitors. Omega鈥檚 Globemaster can give the DJ a run for its money and then some. Omega鈥檚 METAS certified co-axial caliber 8900, display case back with Omega鈥檚 observatory medallion set into the sapphire, magnetic resistance to 15,000 gauss, scratch proof tungsten carbide bezel, quick set hour function and that gorgeous pie pan dial.

but there's a reason why certain artists are in every museum and serious collection and others are relegated to the dustbin of history (and yes, every major watch collection needs a few speedmasters!).

Of course the main goal of every collection should be to be considered "serious" by other "serious" collectors. That's what it's all about, right? 馃槜

of course not. people collect all sorts of things. .

i mean.. these guys probably feel about their garden gnomes the way i do about my watches

ultimately everyone should collect what they want to collect.. i do find it funny when people are completely dismissive of artists that are in every major museum (rothko--i could paint that) or watches that are in the all time great pantheon of classic chronographs. you may not appreciate it. .but there's a reason for it!

When you reach 58, that fxxxing cyclops is invaluable 馃榾
Till you turn 59 and can鈥檛 even read it with the fxxxing cyclops... so I sold my sub and bought an Explorer MK II no date. Easy peasy.

So you were a Panerai guy, then spent a lot of years on Rolex Forum. ( how鈥檇 they go, fun bunch hey ) but now your here hanging out with the cool kids talking smack. ( ahh the internet and the same hang tag 馃槈 )

I think a lot of them are a fun bunch. If you look hard enough and with objective eyes, you鈥檒l see there are rude, classless people on every board hey.

nothing inflammatory about it. . the market is the market. usually for a reason but sometimes not

I guess that's the difference - I don't buy based on "the market" but what I actually like...

Regardless of why someone buys a product, does the market sometimes elevate that which is superior?

Sometimes but not always. Trends influencing various markets come and go, be it stocks, property, furniture or luxury goods. Popular is not the same as superior.

I'm sure sometimes it does. But no one has made a cogent argument for why they believe something is superior in this thread - it's all just people stating that their taste is better than someone else's taste.

The market (for watches and other things) is not always rational. Plenty of examples of that, dating back to tulips, right through to beanie babies...and to use a more relevant example, Rolex bubble backs that were all the rage for a while, and now...well not so much...

Sounds like we agree.
