Easy.... The speedy is the answer as the Rolex is flat and lacks personality .. (thats my 2c) ;-)

I’m in the same boat, although torn between the McQueen Monaco, Explorer 36mm or the 3861 Speedy Sapphire Sandwich.

Currently own BB58 as my daily bought 3yrs ago, and want to pick up something for a milestone after Christmas.

Was headstrong on the Monaco look wise nothing else like it & personally love it. Just not warrant on the RRP for its movement.

Speedy, head knows it’s the better watch, movement, specs, versatile. Just a tad expensive RRP.

Lastly the Explorer. Always thought nothing of this watch, until I tried one on, finish, size, was lovely. Again versatile, but I also don’t want to play the Rolex game.

As much as I absolutely love the Rolex.
I have to agree that the Omega has a bit more of interest going on.
The only factor that hasn't been fully explored(no pun intended) in this discussion is servicing.
The Omega recommended intervals may be shorter than the Rolex, though previous experience has shown that either can go many years beyond the official recommendations.
So over the long term either may cost a similar amount to maintain in proper working order.

What is it?
The 1861 Omega was at every 3-5 years or something along those lines. Now they're talking 7-8 years for the 3861👎
The Rolex was at 5-7 years, now it's out to 10 years👎

That’s a good point definitely worth considering!

I think the goal for me personally is to get the main stay in the collection. I’m certain I’ll buy other watches in the coming years, but I need the everyday versatile piece.

unfortunately I’m the sort of guy who gets carried away with the niche stuff that isn’t very practical and forgets about the core!

Could easily see myself buying a Doxa GMT or something if I hadn’t thought about it properly and have nothing practical to wear daily!

The Speedy also has the advantage of being versatile on many different types of strap options. You can dress it up a bit, dress it down even more, etc. I wouldn't worry about day to day wear.

That’s a great point.
I personally don’t like the explorer off bracelet.

As much as I agree that the Explorer I lacks personality and complication usefulness compared to the 3861 - as an everyday watch, the Rolex is going to be easier to live with simply because it is an automatic. The Speedmaster professional is a tremendous watch, but let's be honest - you're going to have to wind it everyday and that isn't for everyone. Also, having pushers means the Omega is more prone to getting caught on something - I wouldn't consider a chronograph a GADA. In this specific case, I'd go with the Rolex.

Speedy gets the vote for the many excellent reasons given by my predecessors on this thread.

I think you posed the question with the take of "I want a Speedy, but shouldn't I want an Explorer?" Forgive me if I got that wrong. What type of work do you do? It doesn't take too vigorous of work for those pusher buttons to become a liability. Plus I suppose where you intend to get it serviced might be worth asking. If you're going to an independent watchmaker, the Speedy would likely be more expensive to service. If going through the companies, who knows.

At the end of the day, what excites you more? Both have classic, timeless, yet masculine aesthetics. There isn't a wrong answer here if they both excite you. If one doesn't move on, no matter what the hype train says for either.

Best of luck.

Saw this thread, started to write my post and then I saw that you have chosen wisely 😀
Well, there is no wrong choice here. But in this age where we live in, having an understated and under-the-radar watch with superb heritage which you can enjoy without fearing that someone might chop your arm out, I say you have made the right choice. Congrats enjoy every minute of it.

So.... once the Speedy itch was scratched, did you keep looking at Explorers? 😉

“I appreciate your insights, the Rolex does seem a little more dressy, which isn’t really me to be honest.”

Rolex is so desirable for many undesirables… my friend had his stolen, was hit over the head with a bar! They didn’t even speak to him, thankfully he lived to tell the tale.

I don't have any anecdotes and certainly no data to back this up, but.... I'd have thought if someone's going to wallop you over the head for a Rolex, they'll do the same for any shiny upmarket watch that they can fence.

I can't imagine the assailant fretting over whether it's a Tudor, Breitling, Oris or Omega - it's coming off your arm regardless 😁

Haha! Thank you.

it’s actually a replacement of the speedy. I did enjoy the speedy and that new bracelet was like silk.

But I felt it was just a little to big for me to be honest in the end, I spend most of my time wearing 34mm vintage seamasters and polerouters and watches of a similar ilk.
The explorer doesn’t feel like such a big change in comparison
