I'm tempted to go back there and just be like...WTF?!
But what do I really care...not really worth my time.
Or is it....😒
Looking at it here on the computer screen, enlarged, really makes it look that much worse...
Should have been a red flag when they told them they could not even do our simple company logo.
Which is what I wanted. I wanted the "S" on the caseback and if they could fit it, the rest of the inscription.
Or some combination of logo and inscription on caseback with overflow on the clasp.
This is the "S" they could not produce...

Southwestern.jpg

Based on some inscriptions I have seen, I did not think that would be too hard. But I could be totally wrong...

The best solution would be get a new clasp and find a company that does CNC laser engraving, then you could have the whole graphic and message done with complete precision in a professional manner, possibly colored to the company logo as well.
I dont know what comeback you could get from the original engraver but they would not have a leg to stand on if it came to dispute.
Normally I would just pass this off to experience but a replacement clasp will not be cheap.

Man oh man - after all of that...what a letdown!

Ball moved down the field to the 5 yard line...then fumbled.

My grandfather is retiring from the family business. With all details aside, I am looking for something stainless steel with a red dial.
Price is not necessarily a big concern, but trying to keep it below the price of a new Civic.
They initially said, “find a SS Rolex with a red face”, to which I LOL’d. But then I actually looked for it and found this:

https://www.crownandcaliber.com/products/rolex-oyster-perpetual-277200-10-10-rol-4hnp9r?variant=39337648095306&dfw_tracker=26531-39337648095306&utm_term=&utm_campaign=(ROI) High Margin Brands&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_tgt=pla-1403789564096&hsa_grp=98505364021&hsa_src=u&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_mt=&hsa_ver=3&hsa_ad=438135219349&hsa_acc=9835868940&hsa_kw=&hsa_cam=10154649076&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6vbyqO7C8gIVh7LICh0FAQM-EAQYAyABEgLh8vD_BwE

(sorry can’t link the picture)

Which I guess could actually work, but I’m not so sure.
Doesn’t have to be a Rolex, so any suggestions?
Gerard Perragaux made some Ferarri watches with a Ferarri Rde dial, nice watches.
I will make acomment here: When considering a watch for a senior, remeber to take in account how active they are before getting an automatic. I am 67 & my SS ETA 2824-2 sits on the dresser top and runs down.
Don't really go anywhere or active enough to keep it fully wound. Consequenty allways have to wind the watch, set the date or leaveit at home. This adds alot of extra wear on the screw down crown.
Or get an automatic winder for it. Just food for thought.

@vbrad26 saw your post yesterday as I was finishing up work, so I stayed a bit and fixed up that logo for you.. just in case you want to try to get it on the watch with the extra time you now have. I made an eps, svg, ai, pdf. basically a vector file for you, since the one you posted looked a little fuzzy. looks like I can't add it here, but would be happy to send you the files if you want!

you're welcome. if you PM me your email, I can send you the vector files - it looks like I can't PM them to you on here either, I can only do photos.

Was reading the whole story, pleased you made it to get the Rolex with red dial and then saw the picture of engraving. Sorry to be that honest but never saw worth one. The letters are so much off the line…that’s just incredible that your grandma and MIL accepted it. Please do not leave it as it is, there’s still plenty of time before 5th of November. I’m kind of OCD guy this drives me crazy.

Principle lol
And they wanted $3575 (or whatever) plus tax and their 2.5% for running the AMEX.
It would have been back up to about $3800 or so all said and done. Which is not necessarily a bad deal, but it wasn't a good deal.
I was not planning on buying a new watch right now but I wasn't going to pass it up if the price was right, and for me it wasn't.
At least not right now...
I was picking up a '73 VW Squareback on Sunday so I didn't really need to be spending the extra money anyway.
And again I'm not complaining. Like I said they didn't owe me anything....
Keep the cash for the 2.7 flat six that should just about slide in the back of that VW 😎

I think, entirely from memories of long ago, that it’ll fit in the back with a bit of tinware removed. Admit that finding the 2.7 is not without it’s difficulties but there are Porsche owners everywhere who have overrated their 911’s road holding ability and now have multiple body panels in a major state of disrepair, and a going engine. Or maybe just upsize the barrels and pistons after you’ve helicoiled the block and take it out to 2.2 and some efi magic and before you know it you’ve got 140 ponies on offer. All good fun!

Included the clutch and flywheel though mate. 😁
Mind you, didn’t start life as a 2.7. The 2.4 ‘little’ six?
Fair bit of work, the dry sumping a nice addition but price seems a little on the high side. 😕

Enjoy your type 3. I’d heard they were making a bit of a comeback with collectors.

I missed the 964 bubble so I guess we'll see with this one hah!

Since everyone loves a good picture...

@vbrad26 A great story about getting this gift for your grandfather. Can't wait to hear about what he thinks of it this week!

Seems like a red dial was confirmed/set from the beginning. Would you have considered a Pepsi/Coke Rolex or Tudor? There's red in the bezel? Understand that the prices would have been higher than the price of you paid for the OP.

But agree with folks that a Rolex is the way to go for a retirement gift 👍

It had to be a red dial. That was the one condition. And being a Rolex was sort of an equal condition hah.
So the watch is still sitting in my closet believe it or not.
I have been meaning to get it re-engraved but have just had zero time, though I did find a place that can most likely pull it off.
No idea when the watch will actually be gifted to him.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if everyone forgot about it! Hah.

Says novice crim to older lag “I know this geezer who collects watches. He’s got ‘em in watch boxes or somfin’. How do ya know which are the ones worth nickin’? “
Replies the old lag, “ dunno nuffin’ ‘bout watches. But I’ve heard mind that all the best ones on omega forums seem to be in the closet or the bottom of the sock drawer”

Sorry. I’ll get my coat.

Finally gave it to him at the office Xmas party on Saturday.
Complete with the crappy engraving lol. None of us ever had the time to track someone else down to re-do it, though I will be honest not a lot of effort was made.
In any case, he was very happy with it, and at the end of the day that is all that really matters. Though I'd still like to have it done right.
Now lets see how much it actually gets worn lol.
