Need Some help....Which watch to buy

Hey everyone,
I was hoping for some inputs from everyone. I'm in the market for a dive watch, as I want a classic watch that I can pretty much wear everywhere daily and do whatever I'd like in (think: daily activities, plus hiking, beach, boating, diving, camping). I have been considering a brand new from boutique Omega Seamster Diver 300 and an older Rolex Submariner No Date 14060 (non-ceramic). I have seen and tried on both in person. I love the newer features of the Omega and its quality yet the Rolex is always going to be a classic go-to. The downside to the rolex is that the older bezel style and whatnot won't take abuse as well as the Omega. I realize this is an Omega forum but any inputs on pros and cons would be very helpful as I find myself going back and forth and want to make the purchase soon. Thanks for all of the help!

Cheers,
KJE

Congrats on your impending purchase.

Honestly I think the diver 300 is an awesome choice. You could bump it up a notch and do a Planet Ocean or or 300MC as well. I think all 3 done great job serving in any use case.

The Diver 300 has a rock solid version of the 2500 coaxial movement. And it's just a hot watch. Older versions are cool as well.

The 300MC of course is rocking the antimagnetic 8400 master coaxial movement. So, latest & greatest technology with a cool retro vibe that will always be cool.

The Planet Ocean... With the 2016 release you've got 3 generations to consider.

All-in it always comes down to a few variables.

- what you just love and WANT
- budget
- size
- etc

Good luck and post pics when you make your purchase!

Cheers!

Thanks for the input! I did look at the 300mc while I was in the shop. I love the retro styling of it, but for some reason it just didn't seem to strike me. I love the throw-back styling though and the hands are much better than the skeleton hands on the Diver in my opinion....perhaps the answer then is a PO. I haven't greatly considered this because of it's little bit larger size. I wanted to keep it around 40-41mm and as slim as possible...I think the PO is 3mm thicker than the diver (could be wrong). Would you recommend that over the diver?

Cheers!

I have all 3 (except my SMP's aren't ceramic - which is a thicker case measurement) and would comfortably recommend any of them. Always best to try on if you can.

The good news for you is the new PO's arriving later this year will have some 40mm options. They won't be 'thin' but they won't be as thick as the 42's are now. Might be your solution.

if you want vintage, go for a vintage sm300
if you want modern, and for whatever reason don't like the modern sm300 mc, the planet ocean is an excellent choice (the aqua terra, albeit an amazing watch, is not a diver, per se)

I'd do both.
I know, too easy an answer but I'm serious and am in a similar position. I have a SMPc 300m (blue). Love it. Wear it all the time. Matches absolutely everything I wear, and fits in during any occasion.
But, if I were to do it all over again, I'd still get the SMPc, but I'd do the 14060 first. I understand the bezel concerns, but new ones are easy to get for it. And it's already depreciated and (imo) is poised to go up. It's a cleaner dial than the newer four liners... It also takes care of the Rolex bug some ppl get 😗
Once that's procured, and you get the bug for another watch, the SMP will be lying in wait and will have depreciated enough on the second hand market to make it an easier 'next watch purchase.' I'd still go blue as it'll contrast your black 14060.
That's what I'd do.
Now to find me a 14060

I think, honestly, I'm good with either, but think that the modern will deal with constant wear in multiple conditions better because of a sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel or liquid metal bezel, etc. The reason for the non-ceramic sub is that the newer SubC has those huge lugs which makes the watch seem out of proportion to me. I appreciate its updated features and that would likely serve me better, as would the new Diver 300, but, at least for Rolex, I prefer the classical styling-unfortunately that comes with a less durable watch, at least with regards to cosmetics. I think I'm leaning heavily toward the Omega. The styling is great, it has the newer features, costs as much, and is a great watch. I guess is just that I already own an Omega and the skeleton hands that is kind of holding me back, along with that I don't yet own a Rolex....although the PO does fix the skeleton hands issue for me.

and, if you do, and you really want a rolex, there'll be another rolex another day.
don't make a rushed decision purchasing an expensive timepiece, be it rolex, omega or another...

Pick up the Submariner. If it's at a price that will allow you to save fairly son for a Seamaster, then go for the Rolex first. You'll still want an Omega, believe me.

I have three of the watches you mention (a current model ceramic Submariner, the blue ceramic Diver, and the SM300 MC). Each of them has its unique attributes and appeal, and I don't see my small collection as overlapping too much. Every time I look at them, I want to pick up a different one and put it on. This is just the beginning of your journey!!

Have considered how any of these watches would look on your short stocky arms 😕

I'm really just starting to get my feet wet with the Sub lines and differences. Someone more knowledgeable may correct my errors (please). However, some thoughts on rushing the 14060 purchase: I believe these pre-date the glide lock feature on the bracelet and cannot be retrofitted for one. Is it a 14060 or 14060m? The 'm' version has an updated movement with a Breguet overcoil and full balance bridge...which is supposed to have added some stability and increased shock resistance. I don't believe either have the newer parachrom hairspring. You've already found this version has the aluminum bezel and thus believed to be more susceptible to scratches and wear.

Bottom line: You should weigh the pros and cons of the sub version you're looking at with the demands you personally put a daily wear watch through.

My two cents 😗 and it's a 42mm 2500C

For work

For play
Man my 7 3/4 wrists won't let my 3313 PO fit under my cuffs. Granted it's 45.5mm

I'd look at it this way, the SM300 is a more durable, and more appealing watch (cosmetically) than the 14060. So if you're looking to buy a watch that looks amazing, is more modern, and durable I'd go with the SM300. You'll also be the first owner and likely have a warranty.

However if you're looking for something classic, reliable, and that will likely hold it's resale value significantly better than the SM300, then go with the 14060.

The safe play is the Rolex. A Rolex is a Rolex, you can't go wrong, but then again the SM300 is just one ridiculously sexy watch that I have a huge crush on.

Good luck and I hope you make the choice that keeps you happiest.

If you can't decide, maybe just buy both!?!? 😉
