Chris, I'm not looking for an argument but where do you draw the line between running and not running.
I have a speedmaster on which the chrono hand is loose on the post and never resets to the same position twice. In your book is that running or not?

I get you chap, and not looking to argue either 馃憤.

For me there's running (it will work sort of), and running properly (running without issue, and properly maintained).

I know these things are subjective, but I'd really struggle to pay $$$ for something that isn't running properly (which has a falling out crown for example).

Sure, in this case that might be a cheap fix, but to me it would indicate that deeper movement issues may be sitting just below the surface.

We all have to walk our own lines of comfort/cost/experience right? 馃憤

Its horses for courses IMO. If I'm paying a few hundred quid for a DeVille, I'd like it to be running properly so an immediate service doesn't need to be top of my list. If we're looking at several thousand for a Speedmaster, whether it's running or not is less important to me. I want to check the movement is correct (as @Spacefruit notices the asymmetric bridge may be an issue), looks rust free and ideally ticks over. However, it's going for an immediate service anyway as soon as I get my hands in it. This is the trade off when buying from an estate or original owner and it's a compromise I'm happy with. Occasionally you get unforeseen movement issues that require time and money to fix. Often a good service is all that's required.

Agreed that it might just need a service... as long as everything else checked out, I don't think the condition (for me) would ever make it attractive enough to pay the larger sums that this model can go for.

To my eye, the dial isn't attractive... and at these sorts of sums of money... well you want it to look good right? 馃槈

Sensible experts, when you put your watch for 99c on eBay,and talk about not running for this watch is stupid.
I like you man.I can hardly understand what you are saying but its always so cool.

What jurisevac is saying is that putting a watch on Ebay with no reserve and describing it as not running when it clearly does run doesn't make sense.
I'm glad you understood.I really like the bloke. He gives it a go.

I agree with @Spacefruit in this sense - the 200 post rule is in place to prevent people from getting taken for a ride / getting scammed. For many of us on the forum, however, a good number of our watches were likely purchased from sellers who we had no track record with previously and required a bit of a "leap of faith." As long as someone doesn't come crying to OF about getting scammed after PM'ing someone and then not getting the watch, I don't see the true harm in "skirting" the 200 post rule. Just my 2 cents

I think we should go easy on these first time posters. If the alternative is they don't come here, and we dont see a new watch.

If someone wants to contact a one time poster and offer to buy (and I have done it myself)

If the watch is desirable, the rules go out the window. Ideally no offers should be made, but self-interest is hard to overcome. I've noted that people are far harsher when the watch is not very nice...馃槈

This kind of thread always cracks me up. The OP puts some kindling down, squirts it with lighter fluid, strikes a match and leaves. Meanwhile we sit around the campfire and tell ghost stories.

Has anyone noticed the asymmetric bridge?

I dont normally see these on 105002's and less so on movements pre 20m.

I think we should go easy on these first time posters. If the alternative is they don't come here, and we dont see a new watch. I would rather put up with their learning curve. I mean there has to be a way to gently lead them to our way rather than alienate from the start - Im not saying its happened here but it can get silly.

Lets us be judged on how we treat those who break what are to them, unspoken conventions.
(I know we have the stickies, but seriously, when was the last time you read the terms and conditions before clicking "NEXT"?)

Thank you for stating this so appropriately! When I read rude, boorish replies to a newcomer's request for help I don't think it's fair to assume they are just trying to sell a watch.

I also think some here forget too quickly that we were all "newcomers" with our first post, no matter whether we asked questions in an acceptable manner or not! Seems some also forget that all of us were at the bottom of the learning curve at one point!

Yes, there are wonderful sites like Speedmaster101, but do we really expect everyone to find these and do all the research for themselves? I'm glad to share what knowledge I have verbally or by directing a newcomer to great website, online or in person! How many here have learned valuable information from fellow collectors, dealers, etc?

And yes, I always enjoy seeing new watches as a result of someone feeling welcomed here!

Whew!!! Sorry for getting carried away, but this is something I've been wanting to express for some time!

HI
So how should we handle " Sales Fishing" in the discussion forums ( to dodge the 200 post rule) ?

As a mod I do like the members offering constructive suggestions to the OP and not a hard line get loss... message.. show we are humans....

But as others are thinking how many times are we gentle people.. ?

any thoughts?

best

bill

Bill,

My sentiments exactly! Thanks for standing up to just treating people "right"!!! Think we can make this a little more "gentle" place to visit or do we just want to run off every newcomer that asks a question we think silly or elementary?

The watch was listed, the owner turned down high offers that he maybe shouldn't have turned down...

I am not sure if this needs to be its own thread, but I have a question. Looking at the pics again, I think the hands are the original hands and that they have been painted (poorly, as mentioned previously) and relumed. Look closely at the center and you can see the old paint. Now to my question. Can hands be restored?. Lume can be restored with an aged look, why not the hands too.

Yup I think the hands have just been repainted poorly. They scan be stripped, repainted again but better, then aged looking compound added.
