·One week ago today I walked into my AD, E.D. Marshall Jewelers in Scottsdale, and walked out with a new Sapphire Sandwich Speedmaster, 310.30.42.50.01.002. It has been a fun and eventful week, both here at home and at work (I work in advertising). Have received some wonderful compliments on my new watch. It’s only left my wrist for sleeping, and I have truly enjoyed a revised morning ritual which integrates the hand winding of my new Speedy. That satisfying whir of the gears under my fingers as it winds, and then the ever so slight pushback when it is fully wound and ready to rock with me into another day. A quick look at the beautiful movement under the caseback, just can’t resist, and out the door we go.
Some observations after one week…
The bracelet. Having owned three previous moonwatches, this is a major upgrade that will take some getting used to, i.e. the lightness of the bracelet first and foremost. The sheer and feathery feel is definitely a breakthrough for the band. What isn’t is the lack of on the fly adjustment for the band – that would be so welcome. Love the new clasp with the Omega badge on the middle top. The taper of the band will also take some getting used to, but I like it as well.
The watch is dead on for accuracy. Running about .05 to 1 second fast each day for the first week. I think I can live with that. It’s also very easy to tell the time on this watch with just a glance, even from a distance.
For me, I made the correct choice with the Sapphire Sandwich. For some reason, this time the milky ring effect is far less prominent. In fact, the face appears just a bit darker and richer on this model. The light playing off the crystal also complements the polished middle double row of links on the bracelet. The recessed dials with their dimensional sweep are also a new design and very, very cool. The look of the sub-dials alone separates this new model from its kin. The more “jewelry-like” presence of the Sapphire model is preferable to my eyes than the Hesalite, which has its own wonderful qualities. Simple as that for my decision.
Very happy tp welcome my second Omega into the fold. Glad I waited for this new Speedmaster model and its attendant upgrades – both mechanically and stylistically.
