Modern SM300M vs 1861 Speedy Hesalite Wearability

Hey all,

just a quick question.

I own a Hesalite 1861 Speedy on bracelet, and I’m wondering how a modern Seamaster 300M on bracelet wears compared to the Speedy

Which one wears bigger ?

or do they feel about the same?

i know they’re both 42mm, but just asking because of the different bracelets and end links and what not

thanks in advance!

I have both but Speedy 3861. SMP is very substantial and you can certainly feel it in on your wrist. The non-tapered bracelet is on the heavy side as well but overall comfortable. On the other hand, the 3861 bracelet is significantly lighter and sits better on the wrist due the thinner case. The speedy is far more comfortable but no complaint on the SMP. Both are keepers for me.

Just for comparison, my DJ 41 wears heavier on the wrist than the 3861. New speed is very light to my surprise.

I should think they would be similar. The 1120 Seamster Professionals are some of the flattest watches I've ever seen. The coaxial models are thicker.

I had first gen Seamaster GMT and a Speedmaster. Seamaster was way heavier and taler. Current seamasters are thicker.

Sorry if I didn't phrase my question correctly.

I have an 1861 Speedy on bracelet, and am considering picking up the most recent SMP300m, the one that was released on 2018.

I am wondering it wears bigger than the Speedy I own, or smaller, or about the same.

Many thanks!

I also have the 1861 on bracelet and have tried on the 2018 smp many times. In my opinion the diver wears much larger, it’s a thick watch, the way the end lugs slope they’re also very substantial. It’s sides are quit tall as well compared to my 2531.80 seamaster. Much of the thickness in the speedy is in the hesalite crystal which makes it appear thinner than it is. I want to love and own the newer seamaster but can’t deal with its thickness.
Hope this helps.

I just measured my De Ville with a 2500 in it and it's onn 9mm thick. I wonder why the newer watches are made so large?

Both will feel similar on a strap but the Seamaster bracelet is really really heavy.

Have you worn both on the bracelet?

I wonder how they feel with bracelets on.

I guess I'm just going to have to go and try one on.

I just don't like trying things on. I used to love to. But recently, it feels awkward.

I can't enjoy the moment or really really think about it when I have a sales lady/guy staring at me, telling me that right now is the perfect time to buy an "investment" watch ::facepalm1::

I’m really not a fan of the bracelet on either one. If I had to choose between the two, it would be the 1861 Speedmaster as I think that the watch head is thinner and the lugs sit better on the wrist. A third option that is better than both the 1861 Speedy and the new version of the SMPc is the 2012-2017 version of the SMPc with caliber 2500d. It’s smaller at 41mm, thinner and the bracelet is comfortable. It also has an applied logo, a gorgeous no wave dial, and that beautiful hippocampus engraving on the case back.

I don't like modern, heavy bracelets. I wear my Speedmaster on a Forstner flat link and my Seamaster on a NATO. The Seamaster is a little heavier but the overall watch is about the same size as the Speedmaster.

Trying them on is your best bet, awkward or not. See if you can get a referral from someone who's been to an AD or Omega Boutique in your area - sometimes the salespeople are solicitous for sure, but sometimes you get the watch nerds who just enjoy being there with someone else who likes watches as much as they do 😉

I no longer own the Speedy Pro but I do have the FOIS and 2018 SMP. I don't mind chunkier divers for diving proper, and use Sinns, Doxas, Seikos and a Pelagos regularly, but I wouldn't class the 2018 SMP among those in terms of heft or spread, even on the bracelet. On rubber, where it belongs IMO, the 2018 SMP is supremely comfortable, while remaining highly usable and legible and dressing up or down courtesy of its detailed, sculpted case.

The FOIS and Speedy Pro are also comfortable on bracelet or strap, lighter but still with excellent wrist presence. I'd say that the two models wear fair similarly, although the HEV seems to dig into the wrists for some (I'm a lefty, we're largely immune from such things).

I'd put either or both up in the "wear and forget" class of sports watches. The SMP Diver is heftier, but with a flat crystal and its short L2L makes for an easy watch to wear on most wrists. The Speedy may not sit quite as flat, but it is also very comfortable for most, I'd say. I don't think you'd wrong with either as an everyday wearer. Good luck in your decision.

Awesome, thanks for the detailed response.

I haven't looked at the lug to lug yet, but my thinking is that it is shorter on the Seamster than the Speedmaster 1861, because on the speedy, the end links protrude, vs, it looks like on the Seamaster, they are female.
