I went back to work last week for the first time since March 2020. Forgot how tiring going to work is. And ironing work shirts, deciding which watch to wear, fortunately it is almost the end of the school year, so a few more weeks then 2 months off to prepare for going back to work for real.

The biggest raise and the best perk that my employer could ever give me is the freedom to work from home. I save over $2k in Petro annually (which the Quebec gov cannot tax!!!), 90 minutes each day, and an immeasurable amount of stress in traffic.

This is customary in Jewish tradition. You should not take the Lord’s name in vain (one of the Top 10, IIRC). Therefore, you write it with the dash, because all written words are considered to be ephemeral and will be destroyed one day. Even on the internet.

I’ll take it you are not one of the “bevy of academics” he was talking to.

Hadn't thought about that in my snippy little response. That being said, across multiple decades, and probably triple-digit Jewish colleagues (not exactly rare in academia, at least the in US), I've never met any who would actually follow such proscriptions! Well, maybe that one rabbi I crossed paths with from the ed school, perhaps...

I thought I pushed it enough already, no warnings yet.
Wonder why. Do you have an idea?

The trouble with this thread is that I look at "latest" when I turn on the computer, then don't get any further than "Moderators are ridiculous".
Too much time spent ROFL.

Let’s take this beyond off course- can anyone tell me what this is? (It’s a test- not a question). I’ll give a hint- the scorched board is common to these. I have put red over the names to not give it away obviously.

For the reason @gatorcpa mentioned, God's Hebrew four-letter name is not generally put in writing. However, my understanding is that the hyphenated word being discussed is generally not felt to be necessary because "God" is not actually God's name. At least for most Jews. Maybe some people do it just to be safe, or maybe they are trying to send a certain signal about their orthodoxy.

“Fences around the Torah”, as I was taught.

There are a lot of traditions that make no sense in a modern world. I had a relative that married a very religious woman and he had to install a second garbage disposal for the dairy dishes.

I know you are not supposed to mix meat and dairy, so a cheeseburger is not kosher, but that one was news to me.

No more ridiculous than the amount of Speedmaster debate going on here. And Speedmasters cost a lot more than garbage disposals.

My brother is a conservative rabbi, I am the furthest thing from it (I do love bacon). When they were meat eaters they had the separate sinks etc. They have been veggie for about 15 years and their new house has a normal kitchen- I guess an easy way around the rules. Whenever I would visit them when they were living in LA, I would have dinner with them, then go to In&Out Burger immediately thereafter.

The way I understand kosher rules is that 5k years ago, if you told someone that eating undercooked pork could kill them, they would blow you off. If you told them it was Gods will- then that settles it. Much of it pertained to hygiene.

An 8 page thread and only one cat photo, standards are slipping lad's.......
LADS!!! Not ‘Lad’s’ - the plural of ‘Lad’ not the possessive!
