My position is, you cannot defend this while bashing Steinhart or any of the Seamaster 300 homages etc etc. This is an homage plain and simple. (If you like homage watches, fine 😀 )
Now, this forum does not allow homage watches - so it will be very interesting to see how these will be considered by the mods if one or more of our members here buy one and put it up on WRUW and such.
The homage debate goes round and round-Steinhart is a reputable brand making watches of decent quality that are in the style of other watches. They, as other companies like them should be perfectly acceptable in any forum as they are not trying to deceive in any way and are self-branded.
Unlike this watch, Steinhart clearly brands their watches as their own and don't make any illusion by name or logo to the watches they are emulating.
Actually Steinhart (I don't like but) propose the Daytona copy at 1000$ with an ETA 2824 Dubois-Depraz module : https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/chronographs/ocean-one-vintage-chronograph.html
The Uni-Racer at 3500$ is definitely over priced. I believe IMHO that's the main reason for that Bashing.

The Messana is an homage- that's fine- but the use of their logo to look like UG's, is just a cheap attempt at trying to cash in of the UG allure....but then all of the ones showed are trying to do that.
I know Steinharts are cheap. I'm not talking about price. That Ocean One Vintage Chronograph has not one ounce of originality. Come on, they were so proud that it's Swiss made that they had to put it in red in the middle of the dial?
IMO - Dan Henry is a good example of a
because they mostly take elements of a number of period designs and combine them into something evocative, but not a carbon copy of, those watches.
Steinharts are homage watches. And that's fine, I think people should be allowed to enjoy homages, but one should not praise Steinhart in one breath and ether Massena in the other. They are the same, design-wise.
But the most visible fonts on the Steinharts - those on the bezels - aping Rolex to a ridiculous degree, that's OK?
Look, Massena tried to relaunch UG first and couldn't, so he did the next best thing. But let's not fool ourselves that anybody is buying those Steinharts for any reason other than to have a watch that looks like a Rolex
I think we are getting our messages crossed here- I think we are actually on the same page. What I have been saying is the Messana is just as valid an "homage" watch on its own as a Steinhart- but that statement in itself may offend some who look down at Steinhart as a knock-off and this as a well thought out reproduction....I don't see the difference.
OK - then we hold the same opinion!
Which is why I think the real conflict may come when someone who has just received his $3500 Massena has his post removed here because it's an homage watch. Or will he?
Unlike say, the very cool Q Timex HODINKEE, this watch is not sold out. I think ML is getting a message.
