My position is, you cannot defend this while bashing Steinhart or any of the Seamaster 300 homages etc etc. This is an homage plain and simple. (If you like homage watches, fine 😀 )

Now, this forum does not allow homage watches - so it will be very interesting to see how these will be considered by the mods if one or more of our members here buy one and put it up on WRUW and such.

The homage debate goes round and round-Steinhart is a reputable brand making watches of decent quality that are in the style of other watches. They, as other companies like them should be perfectly acceptable in any forum as they are not trying to deceive in any way and are self-branded.
Unlike this watch, Steinhart clearly brands their watches as their own and don't make any illusion by name or logo to the watches they are emulating.

OK, let me see if I follow:

Not what I said- all are ok if they are branded with their own company branding. They are all "in the style of"- and that was my arguement- the term "homage" has a rather broad application these days, a fake is a fake- these (the Messana included) are not "fakes" as they are self-branded.
The Messana is an homage- that's fine- but the use of their logo to look like UG's, is just a cheap attempt at trying to cash in of the UG allure....but then all of the ones showed are trying to do that.

I have no problem with this watch itself- it's the "wink" they are doing, then asking $3.5k for it which I find offensive.

Actually Steinhart (I don't like but) propose the Daytona copy at 1000$ with an ETA 2824 Dubois-Depraz module : https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/chronographs/ocean-one-vintage-chronograph.html

The Uni-Racer at 3500$ is definitely over priced. I believe IMHO that's the main reason for that Bashing.
That and the shameless, brazen and apparently unauthorized use of the UG brand, model and heritage to market the watch. Steinhart make no such implications. The comments on the Dink are mostly negative, same critique.

I know Steinharts are cheap. I'm not talking about price. That Ocean One Vintage Chronograph has not one ounce of originality. Come on, they were so proud that it's Swiss made that they had to put it in red in the middle of the dial?

IMO - Dan Henry is a good example of a

reputable brand making watches of decent quality that are in the style of other watches

because they mostly take elements of a number of period designs and combine them into something evocative, but not a carbon copy of, those watches.

Steinharts are homage watches. And that's fine, I think people should be allowed to enjoy homages, but one should not praise Steinhart in one breath and ether Massena in the other. They are the same, design-wise.

But the most visible fonts on the Steinharts - those on the bezels - aping Rolex to a ridiculous degree, that's OK?

Look, Massena tried to relaunch UG first and couldn't, so he did the next best thing. But let's not fool ourselves that anybody is buying those Steinharts for any reason other than to have a watch that looks like a Rolex

Agree with this all- we are not far off, I guess I'm just a little more "offended" at the marketing hype and price tag- but my opinion doesn't matter here- they will sell them all I'm sure.

I think we are getting our messages crossed here- I think we are actually on the same page. What I have been saying is the Messana is just as valid an "homage" watch on its own as a Steinhart- but that statement in itself may offend some who look down at Steinhart as a knock-off and this as a well thought out reproduction....I don't see the difference.

OK - then we hold the same opinion!

Which is why I think the real conflict may come when someone who has just received his $3500 Massena has his post removed here because it's an homage watch. Or will he?

I can't speak for the mod's, but I think they have been very gracious on this point- at least in the time since I've been here. We also have to remember that the landscape of reissues and micro brands has widened 100 fold in the last 5 years so it would be hard to enforce a mandate when so many on the market today resemble those that have come before...sometimes to a not so subtle degree.

I think the offense from this is not in making a pretty faithful reproduction of the UG, it's the attitude of it. They dangled the pics and got cheeky with the logo and then said- yeah, it's worth what a Tudor, Tag or a Breitling sells for.

What a disappointment. I guess I had my hopes up that UG would be reincarnated like so many other storied brands from the pre-quartz era (like the recent re-launch of Nivada Grenchen). If Massena Lab wasn't able to convince the current owners of the UG IP to sell or license him the name, I'm surprised that ML went ahead with the project anyway and then aped the old UG logo to the point of mimicry.

Unlike say, the very cool Q Timex HODINKEE, this watch is not sold out. I think ML is getting a message.
