let's not fool ourselves that anybody is buying those Steinharts for any reason other than to have a watch that looks like a Rolex

You'd be wrong.

I'm sure some people is "buying those Steinharts for any reason other than to have a watch that looks like a Rolex" but also be sure others are buying those Steinhart because they like the look of them and the value (price / quality) proposition.

There was another endless piece of sales 🤬 ‘published’ on HODINKEE today trying to shift these watches;

https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/massena-lab-uni-racer

Can we officially call this release a flop yet?

Was gonna say the same thing - if they only made 200 of each colorway yet Hodinkee has to shill em months later, think it was maybe not a very good effort

Yeah but.... they look like Rolexes. (Exactly like Rolexes...) Remove that and the value proposition is no better or worse than any other sub- $1000 microbrand. They're definitely buying Steinharts because they look like Rolexes.

The fact that they sell out of a ridiculous travel clock in 2 hours but can’t unload these...yikes!

Maybe if they charged $8k USD for these they would fly off the shelves?

No chance in Hell they sold out of the travel clocks. If that was really the case, why haven't a single owner come forward? And there's not a single one put up at a premium anywhere.

Generally a Hodinkee LE will sell out because of flippers but that's a great point - even the huge amount of embarrassment wouldn't mean nobody has been happy with their purchase of the Travel Clock.

Yea ... Been a busy day. Just saw that e mail. Too bad they don’t allow comments on these marketing articles. No price reduction though.

The fact that the Massena Lab Uniracers have not sold out yet and Hodinkee is heavily pushing them is quite fascinating. Honestly, I'm surprised. Though I wasn't interested in buying one myself at the MSRP of US$ 3495, I figured that they would've been able to move 400 watches fairly easily, especially with the support of the Hodinkee marketing machine. I suppose this proves that the market for a relatively expensive UG chrono homage is a lot shallower than anyone (particularly ML) expected.

Have these watches started showing up on the secondary market? Will be interesting to see how the Uniracer prices track over the next several years.

I expect quite poorly - it costs 2-3 times what other Sellita-powered micro chronos go for, and it's very unclear what the additional value is. It also doesn't have the name recognition of Universal Geneve, just the look - and it's fairly clear that that's just not enough.

Besides, someone is reviving the Excelsior Park name with the very same movement, but with a sub 2k EUR price tag. I think those will be much more attractive to buyers in any case - new or used.

Shameless promoting of absolute rubbish. I couldn't even make it through the write-up - laughable. These are an abomination. Not sure how any legitimate credence can be given to a complete rip-off, posing as a revival, and asking such a ludicrous price. I literally hate these.

I think it is an awesome watch, with very high quality finishing of the dial. and case Subtile cross hair in red on the subdials and a slightly off white luminous hour marker. The blued hands have been praised enough already ! All fits nicely on the wrist as the case is shaped to wear small but with enough heigth to give it presence. And with a solid movement serviceable by any watchmaker, and it runs fine albeit with less tactile feel on the crown than i would have preffered. A very nice addition to my rotation !

If the UG owners had some balls they should make watches themselves, but now someone else does it for them its been made into an issue ? Lots of `inspired` copies out there so give it a rest. My only point with it is this, after a collab was out of the question Massena should have put their M logo up the right way on the dial and not pretend it is an U. But i guess he has learned as well from all this.

Enjoy !

It’s an issue because there is absolutely nothing original about this watch. All the wonderful details you point out are a carbon copy from the icon. It’s a complete shameless knock-off.

I have never understood, and I don't think I ever will - the idea of "big wrist presence" and the preference for thicker watches. For hundreds of years, a thin watch was considered a sign of good craftsmanship. It meant finer tolerances. Thinner movements. Interesting how the times change.

And perfectly executed by the looks of it ! . Yours need some service by the look of the corroding hands, something i dont have to worry about as the quality is much better due to modern production etc. As i remember from the Omega 1957 trilogy, it took them years to copy their own watches so it must be quiet difficult and compliments for the new execution !! So your view is based on some misguided believe of moral ownership to protect the UG legacy ? Give me a break ! UG as a brand has been dead for years and there is no copyright on layout of dials. Write to them if you have complaints and step into the 21st century of new watches 😀
Does yours have lume ?
