Well on an unrelated topic I just bought this on ebay for $300. I guess it neither fits the "safe-to-travel", nor "waterproof" criteria.

Its a vintage Landeron, recently serviced.

Should arrive pretty soon, we'll see how it looks in person.

Saw a couple of Seikos, and also vintage caravelles can be snatched for pretty cheap on ebay.

I also thought of some A11 Elgins. Definitely discrete (albeit small), inexpensive but not water proof/ready. All those can look professional depending on strap optikns I guess

I just picked up a Nodus Trieste. It has a Seiko Automatic movement and so far I am in love with it. Looks like you can snag one between $2-$500.

I wanted a no date diver that didn’t look too homagey. I checked out Steinhart vintage and a few others before pulling the trigger on this one. Straps aren’t the best IMO but I recently switched my Speedy to a new strap so has a nice leather strap laying in the box.

Nice, quite different dial design - I will look into it definitely

Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. A storied watch that is durable, does not break the bank, and is waterproof. My other main choice would be the modern Seiko Alpinist which is a beautiful watch with quality of something you would pay a lot more for. I love the compass gadget and the tradition behind it. Both are also well sized to anybody's wrists. Here are two pictures of each to compare. Also is two basic amazon links for both.

A travel watch, to my mind, has to also be a beach watch. Something sea and pool worthy, that can handle sand – but dressy enough to have out for dinner.

I know it isn't a sub $1000 proposition, but for a little more you can sometimes scoop a used, mid-size Bond-era Seamaster from the late 90's or early 00's. This is an elegant sports watch that can take anything you throw at it, but also holds it's own under the sleeve of a dress shirt.

Good value. Good investment. Solid watch.

dear all,

I have a nice collection of Omega watches- two 30t2s and a Speedy Alaska. Until recently I also had a kickstarter diver watch which I liked, but looked a bit too casual and quite unwearable in business environments.

I travel alot for work, mostly to Latin America- and sometimes to slightly dicey places (Ciudad del Este, Paso Canoas etc...). I've been looking for a sub $1k mechanical watch I could wear without attracting too much attention, and that also has decent water resistance. As such, I was thinking about a diver.

I had my eye on a Helson Skindiver, and a Halios.

At this point I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but the criteria would be: discrete, business ok, waterproof, mechanical movement (no quartz or mechaquartz) and sub $1,000.

Any ideas?

Thanks alot
Look at Ball Standard, they make super watches for a daily wear !

Stowa, they make a nice fliger.

Although for travel I like to have home time handy, perhaps some chrono with a 12hr counter, or something with an elapsed time bezel. Seiko, Sinn and Hamilton are great too as mentioned by others.

I'm guessing the poster is younger than me. What it says to me: "I am happy to impart my knowledge to you, but can't be bothered to use the shift key, and am going to transfer that extra effort onto you, the reader, instead". But it's good advice - many is the time I've gone boating, fallen into the water, and then got robbed by gangs in my neighbourhood on the way home.

I believe for under $1000 you can pick up a used Tag Heuer twin time or Tag Heuer Formula 1 GMT. It would depend on your needs. When I travel I like to keep track of my home time zone. I think the Formula 1 Gmt is the better option, due to it having a bit more versiltlity over the Twin time

I’d echo the Seamaster 300M ‘Bond’ suggested above.

If you’re looking for the full-size 41mm, a used quartz model is absolutely in range of $1k on forum sales sections. Waterproof, quartz accuracy, durability and ease of use, cheap and easy to service, likely to hold its value at $1k for the foreseeable future and all-around practicality...

Checks so many “cheap and cheerful” travel watch boxes.... get it pressure tested and you’re ready to go...
