A vintage Seiko ticked the box for me, for the reasons you mention above.
Granted I haven't chanced it with diving. But wouldn't hesitate with a newer model.
Have bonded very well with mine.

The vintage aspect of it is really appealing. I could probably pull the trigger on a diver with such a dial

And just like Vintage Speedmasters, there's a lot of fun in finding an all original with correct dial, hands, bezel, movement and original lume. Modern ones are of course less problematic and water resistance guaranteed.
But I like vintage.

+1 for Seiko - I just bought a SARB017 and its WR is 200m. Maybe also consider Hamilton and Orient. If you fancy going a bit less common, the Magrette Dual Time is a nice piece of kit (and pretty practical). Then there's always a 24 hour purist Glycine.......choices, choices 😁

Im going to sound bigot, shallow as hell and probably very ignorant, but I perceive Orient and Glycine as qualitative enough. Magrette I find interesting for the microbrand aspect of it, and Hamilton I associate with their US army issued watches. I should probably take a closer look though. They had a PanAmerican watch a couple years ago that was interesting.

This particular ref is the Seiko SUWA 6309-7049
Once favoured by an up and coming singer.
He loved his Heuers and Seikos in the day.

They have great hommage watchces, but all quartza/mechaquartz, right?

The chronographs are mecaquartz, the other watches are automatic Seiko calibers 😉

I have a $50 Pulser I bought off woot.com. It's an automatic and has worked great for 8-10 years now. The problem is, is that it looks expensive so when traveling to areas with a lot of pickpockets I am often told that I'd better take off my expensive watch.

Damasko DA36 if looking new, or a DA4X if used. I prefer the models with a bezel. The ice hardened Damasko steel is preferable to me compared to Sinn's tegimenation (which isn't available on the 556). produktfoto-DA36-01.jpg

Another vote for Squale. Superb cases and finishing for the money, plus they look great. Or if you want something rugged, how about a Marathon.

Sinn 104
Looks amazing. Sinn has good pedigree too. It does look business-y too. But I'm pushing the $1,000 criteria I guess

I like that second one, I'm usually not a big fan of aviaiator dials though. Is the steel difference really perceivable vs. the tegimenation in hand?

Marathon I feel not business-ready enough. Amazing designs, but very military. Squale yes definitely.

If you're willing to wait another month or so, the new Halios should be available and they are AMAZING. I had a chance to check them out here in NYC and I'm pretty sold on the yellow dial.

+1 on the Helson Skindiver. Great watch and solidly built.
+1 for Steinhart but they look to Rolexy and will attract attention.
+1 for Seikos modern and vintage.

+1. Specifically the Sinn 556 (two variants 556i with no numerals and glossy dial, 556A 12,3,6,9 and matte dial). 38.5mm case with a screw down crown. Basically a “poor man’s explorer” in my eyes. Here are pics of my (now sold) 556i

There are hundreds of Seikos to pick from too, one of the new turtles or Samurais could fit the bill even though on the sportier side(I have the PADI Turtle SRPA21)

Another micro brand to consider is Raven. They just released their new watch the Venture (42mm dive watch)
I have their previous release the trekker and am blown away at the quality. If the venture were a bit smaller I would be getting one

http://www.ravenwatches.com/venture/

Squale has a great selection under 1000 as well (GMT also!). I know @Jking has a BLNR style one and loves it!

If you want more options I can keep brain storming! I’m hoping to get a Halios Seaforth too btw!
Love the dog! More seriously the Sinn is very nice, I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestions. Looked into the Raven, and they have interesting models as well.

Yes, I saw them too at the fair. Very well built. Liked Von Brauge too, but the price point was way too steep.

Squale diver. $800 or less. Wears nice and looks classy on leather with dress clothes.

I wear it when I travel and dont want to wear my OMEGA’s. Get a lot of compliments on it.

You should look at their website - both of those come in different colors and dial configurations. Tegimentation is only a few microns deep on the surface of the steel, while the ice hardened steel of the Damasko is all the way through. It is possible to crack through the tegimented layer on a Sinn and scratch the watch - it essentially cracks like an eggshell. This would require a pretty strong hit though from what I understand. Most used Damaskos that I've seen for sale essentially look new, because they don't scratch. I've personally never held either. While I loved Sinn, I realized that what I wanted was a Damasko because they simply offer better value.
