Pretentious, ostentatious, or just f馃がg ugly? Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, I was trying to keep up with someone while at a flea-market in Orlando.

I acquired my second Speedmaster because I was stupid enough to sell my first Speedmaster which I purchased at like..17 years of age. The Planet Ocean...well, I've always been prone to impulsiveness. I just love watches. Even as a kid, I needed complications. I didn't know what complications were but by golly, I needed them.

After having been downsized from corporations twice and a law firm once, I now work in an extraordinarily low prestige job. Sometimes I look at the Omegas and think "What the heck was I thinking? These watches do not go with my lifestyle." I probably won't get anymore (though I have this strong compulsion to hit the Watchrecon site on a near daily basis) and if my wife finds out, I DEFINITELY won't be getting anymore. I simply can't afford to be pretentious. Proud maybe. But knowing the truth of what I do, humility forces pretentiousness out the door.

But the bottom line, figuratively and literally, is that Omegas are great, well built watches.

so I guess I am pretentious and ostentatious as shit then. As my income level has grown over years, I have been able to buy myself toys / investment objects that are more and more costly. I have wanted a Rolex since I was in puberty, and now I have my son's birthyear Pepsi I have wanted an Omega since I met someone in College with one, and now I have my 2nd. (I think that the GO Senator is friggin gorgeous, and the IWC portofino is too.) It makes me feel good to wear my expensive watches and I love to look at them all day in the office. And yes.. if someone notices my watch and comments on how good looking it is.. I appreciate that. If they want to hold it or try it on.. sure! I am hoping that maybe they will gain appreciation and maybe get into the brand as I am.

I don't think I am better than anyone that doesn't have the means to buy one, I am a lucky person and I feel good karma that has allowed me to build a small collection. I am not smart enough or have enough time to research the Vintage watches, so I don't own any except for my Grandfathers Hamilton and my Bradley Mickey Mouse. But I appreciate the vintage watch and those that are collectors.

Honestly people who are buying watches for the gratification of people knowing they spent a crap ton of money aren't wasting time here.

Too many cats, squirrels and mystery uncles.

Food for thought - is it pretentious to make generalizations (even with caveats) about panerai, rolex, and patek owners?

Is calling out the pretentiousness of others in and of itself a little pretentious?
Probably. But, what the heck.. 馃槈

Not to hijack the thread but since you mentioned it.

I checked the terms and rules - nothing there about the necessity of an avatar. Rather childish. But I'll play the game. Give me a bit of time to come up with something...suitable.

Think of it as an aspect of the forum's culture 馃槈

Can one not be pretentious, yet pretend to be?

Depends which community you are talking about. Those who enjoy all watches from the top down...no problem. Those who have more money than manners then who cares about them.

Kind of a crapper.
But lobs up a nice juicy wiffleball for @ulackfocus.

Much too easy for a moderator of my talents.

However, potty humor is certainly fitting seeing how "childish" this place is, eh @Richie?

The reply button did not seem to be working, hence the repetitious posts. Man, what a way to make a first post.
