My wife is from Finland, she just doesn't talk at all, I guess finnish is the easiest language to learn, just say nothing for a long time and on the way out of the door say " kitos"

Tell me about it. I am here and now "coming out" as half Finnish (not half-finnished). My mother is from Finland and even if she is part of the Finnish minority that has Swedish as her first and only language there are other cultural things that match 100%. Strangely enough - even if she did not communicate by talking a lot there was never any doubt who was running things...

For me growing up here in Sweden there was a "funny" ritual every year - once a year I had to have a special meeting at school together with my parents explaining why I did not need "hemspr氓ksundervisning". The system here at that time gave any child, with parents from another country, almost obligatory lessons in their native language. The philosophy was that if not knowing your native language well enough - you could not learn the new language properly. School could see that I had a Finnish mother and ergo - I had to learn Finnish. The problem was that my mother did not speak Finnish at all and that took some serious explaining. Every year. Sometimes I wish I had played along. I would have known one more language. Maybe I would have ended up the strong, silent type with a sauna fetisch...

As I see it, we humans have varied and different individual motivations for what we do. There is a certain level of pretention in lots of things that we do. It depends on the degree and our own view point of the subject as to whether we find the other person's behaviour this side of the pretentious line, or the other.

Those with $10 watches may view most of us as pretentious wankers, with too much money and no real life. Those who post on the Rich-Kids-of-Instagram site may see us as pathetic losers with no idea.

Which one of us who posts a photo of a watch or an opinion is not hoping to see a few likes or receive positive comments? Not me.

Perhaps the palpable difference here is the sense of fun, and knocking back into place of those who may be appearing a bit "special". I wonder whether that has a connection with the Aussie origins. ( I may save that for a later contentious set of posts).

Great forum, very little onanism, lots of fun. What more to ask for in life

Everyone is, to varying degrees, pretentious. I think it's undeniable if you're being objective. Some just hide it better than others.

This is what I'm travelling with at the moment, which would make me an arriviste vintage tool. Yeah, that works....
Learned a new word today, thanks. Naturally, if you belong to two or more of the categories, which most all of us do, then you are not considered in the grouping. I guess that may be pretentious since I separate the 4th category...the one in which almost every OF member falls.

On what occasions does one say "Bork! Bork! Bork!"?

Only if one is concurrently 'beagle burgening' in the kitchen, otherwise the statement is fallacious to the point of confirming that one is being a 'fatuous asshole' and simultaneously the unwiting object of self parody.

My 2 cents

Well like, Swedish is the same as English, right?

One thing I find fascinating is that people can and do drop $25,000 for a watch but we all know there is a difference in the person who wants you to know they spent $25k and spent it because they wanted to notch their belt with a $25k purchase and there are people who admire the beauty and utility and $25k is just the barrier they had to get past to own it.

I see a lot of people here who view price as just the hurdle to cross to own a delight producing machine. Some posters have to save to buy a Seiko 5 some can buy a Breguet Classique Moonphase on a whim.

What makes this my hangout is that the posters here share the joy of each of the new watch owners.
Off topic but if you don't think the internet goblins aren't watching everything you do, right after posting that got served an ad for a Breguet Classique Moonphase :/

Funny all this. I was having a smoke yesterday and the boss who starts half hour after me was walking into work and stopped to look at the time on my watch. Knowing I'm a watch guy she asked if the new watch I was wearing had a crystal as it looked so clear. Mentioning that she finds its impressive that a guy like me is into watches even though she thinks it's a weird the whole no battery thingy.

This led to a new ex-army guy pretentiously explaining how his solar powered digital Casio was a better watch than mine.
Maybe it is.
Bet it does what he wants at a price point he likes.

so I guess I am pretentious and ostentatious as shit then. As my income level has grown over years, I have been able to buy myself toys / investment objects that are more and more costly. I have wanted a Rolex since I was in puberty, and now I have my son's birthyear Pepsi I have wanted an Omega since I met someone in College with one, and now I have my 2nd. (I think that the GO Senator is friggin gorgeous, and the IWC portofino is too.) It makes me feel good to wear my expensive watches and I love to look at them all day in the office. And yes.. if someone notices my watch and comments on how good looking it is.. I appreciate that. If they want to hold it or try it on.. sure! I am hoping that maybe they will gain appreciation and maybe get into the brand as I am.

I don't think I am better than anyone that doesn't have the means to buy one, I am a lucky person and I feel good karma that has allowed me to build a small collection. I am not smart enough or have enough time to research the Vintage watches, so I don't own any except for my Grandfathers Hamilton and my Bradley Mickey Mouse. But I appreciate the vintage watch and those that are collectors.

Which one of us who posts a photo of a watch or an opinion is not hoping to see a few likes or receive positive comments? Not me.

I don't see this as being pretentious (not saying you do, by the way), but I see this as just wanting to "belong" in a group of like minded people. It's pretty natural and happens in countless ways across all walks of life. I will certainly "like" a wrist shot of a watch that appeals to me, but to be honest if you asked me 5 minutes later to tell you who's watch that was that I just liked, I would not likely be able to tell you...

Wanting attention and needing it for validation are 2 different things. Not sure anyone needs it here, but I'm sure we won't complain if we get a few likes for a wrist shot.

Since I work alone all day, and rarely post wrist shots here (or anywhere really) I'm pretty sure I buy the watches I have for myself, not for anyone else. Okay my wife sees them (not that she pays attention) and the neighbours might see me out walking the dogs, but as I'm bending down to pick up dog poop I doubt anyone is paying attention to my watch...

"Hey Al, what do you have on today?"

"Well John, it's my GO PanoReserve with the exquisitely finished Cal. 65"

"Sniff..sniff...what's that smell, Al?"

Cheers, Al

If that is a person's actual reason for buying a particular watch... Even standing next to someone it is often very difficult to see what watch they might be wearing...

This could explain why watches are now 50mm.

That's pretty much the reason indeed. This plus "mine is bigger than yours".

Love looking at, and learning about all the amazing watches on this forum. And appreciate all the super knowledgeable and passionate folks here. Nothing pretentious about any of it, methinks. 馃榾

P.s.: We're omegans, not some piffling paneristi, after all. 馃槣
