Doesn't count if it's only 2 weeks 馃榿

2 weeks is an eternity in flipper years. I can't believe I still own my Breitling after 8 years. Guess my wife would smack me around if I flipped a gift.

patek/rolex/panerai/et al afficionados looking down on omega fans remind me of porsche/ferrari/lambo/et al fans looking down on bimmer people...
being that i'm both a huge omega and bimmer fan/user for life, i only laugh at the fools...
performance and looks-wise, ours can do anything yours can, and better...and for far less scratch, too...
how pretentious of me, right? 馃槈

99% of the time it's a Pamerai too, they think the model being PAMXX means that the watch should say Pamerai 馃槈

So many fakes. So, so many fakes.

Mr. Photoshop has clocked in!

Put a two-tone Datejust on a brown or black leather strap and you've got a sweet setup, and not pretentious at all.

The title was meant to be a little pretentious. 馃槈

Anyway, I will say that I agree with the majority of what you guys are saying. It should be a matter of personal pleasure of completing (collecting) something that took time, research, and effort to achieve.

What I've noticed is an emerging trend toward "Look at me!" culture. Primarily, this comes from the budding Instagram, Twitter, and Hodinkee set-ups, which emphasis photos and exclusiveness first and descriptions/history second.

Forums, on average, IMO have a deeper affection. But then again... I'm biased.

Can't really completely get out of "preteniousness" when you're talking about what is marketed as "luxury watches".

That said, OF IMHO is full of watch geeks who for the most part have esoteric conversations (a good thing) on the threads. Rarely do I see "my latest investment acquisition suitable for my salary range and social status" threads (also a good thing).

"OMG Look at this XXXXX Omega on MY wrist"

You want people to notice you, you want people to gawk and validate, you're primping and preening on the world stage....

It's pretentious.

just be honest.

If that is a person's actual reason for buying a particular watch, then perhaps you are right. But to do that I think you need a pretty flashy watch full of shiny bits so that people will notice it in the first place. Even standing next to someone it is often very difficult to see what watch they might be wearing. If you want to flash your wealth or give off an image of wealth then watches are probably not the most obvious way to do it. Friends and acquaintances/work colleagues that ask about my watches usually look at me like I am some kind of halfwit for spending money on stupid watches.

You're buying Hillary Clinton's watch? What is it a Movado museum style or something?

Celicas, the underrated sports car of our time!

I said "premium" 馃槈

I do have a certain fondness for the bio-design 2.0T 4wd Celica, though 馃榿

(and, btw, just to prove my appreciation of japanese sports products, be they time or wheels:

I think that LouS really nailed it earlier.

For years I have classified people into a three categories, and like LouS, talk to people all of the time about their watches.

Timex, Seiko, No Watch at all--these people don't care, and want a watch to tell time, that is it. It is a tool a nothing more.

Modern (Insert Rolex, Panerai, Omega, Breitling, etc.)--some, not all of these people, bought a nice watch for the sole purpose to telling everyone else that they have arrived. You can usually tell this type of person based on the way in which they carry themselves in public,

Vintage (Insert whatever watch you want)--these people are very similar to the Timex, Seiko, no watch at all crowd, as they either inherited the watch and wear it because of the sentimental attachment, or they are like a majority of us, and appreciate the vintage pieces.

While there are always exception to the rules, these have been really accurate over the last 15+ years. For the better part of a decade, I started up conversations with people that I met socially in DC about watches, and some of those people became my closest friends...water always finds its level. For rule #2, some of the biggest jackasses I have ever met wore a modern Rolex...and I say that having cut my teeth on vintage Rolex and loving the historic brand.
This is what I'm travelling with at the moment, which would make me an arriviste vintage tool. Yeah, that works....
