I have been a banker for going on 40 years and this thread has made me smile
I think that LouS really nailed it earlier.

For years I have classified people into a three categories, and like LouS, talk to people all of the time about their watches.

Timex, Seiko, No Watch at all--these people don't care, and want a watch to tell time, that is it. It is a tool a nothing more.

Modern (Insert Rolex, Panerai, Omega, Breitling, etc.)--some, not all of these people, bought a nice watch for the sole purpose to telling everyone else that they have arrived. You can usually tell this type of person based on the way in which they carry themselves in public,

Vintage (Insert whatever watch you want)--these people are very similar to the Timex, Seiko, no watch at all crowd, as they either inherited the watch and wear it because of the sentimental attachment, or they are like a majority of us, and appreciate the vintage pieces.

While there are always exception to the rules, these have been really accurate over the last 15+ years. For the better part of a decade, I started up conversations with people that I met socially in DC about watches, and some of those people became my closest friends...water always finds its level. For rule #2, some of the biggest jackasses I have ever met wore a modern Rolex...and I say that having cut my teeth on vintage Rolex and loving the historic brand.

I have been in banking for nearly 40 years and have spent most of my working live amongst the second set of people. As I am now an old codger with clearly a wealth of amassed knowledge I feel it is my duty to pass this on to the younger fledgling bankers and often hold forth on the various warning signs to heed. These are blocked paved car parking spaces for directors, businesses with their own flag, fish tanks in reception and a board of directors all sporting modern Rolex. Those amongst you with a less than generous view of my chosen profession will no doubt point out that we are as guilty of these crimes and I wholehearted agree as I still come out in cold sweats when I hear 1990s music, see red braces, and a two tone Datejust Rolex as it reminds me of the lunches that lasted till bedtime

Years ago my roommate got married, and his stepbrother, a lawyer from Fairhope, AL with a high opinion of himself, was in attendance.

We hosted a party at our house, and somehow I got to talking to him, and he brought up watches. My roommate had told him I was a watch guy.

To my amazement, he preceded to tell me that the watch I was wearing looked cheap because it was on a rubber strap , and I really needed a Rolex Sub like his, on a bracelet.

I let him dig his hole, and then I said, "yeah, you are right. The funny thing is that I could get four of your Subs for what one of these costs..."

His jaw dropped and he was like, "what is that?"

I informed it was an AP ROO, and he said, "well I have never hear of it..."

My response..."I don't think these have made to it Alabama yet."

Pretentious rubes are a rare find.

Let's face it, the only reason we come here is because no one outside of this site gives 2 shit's about what watch we are wearing! 馃榾

Funny all this. I was having a smoke yesterday and the boss who starts half hour after me was walking into work and stopped to look at the time on my watch. Knowing I'm a watch guy she asked if the new watch I was wearing had a crystal as it looked so clear. Mentioning that she finds its impressive that a guy like me is into watches even though she thinks it's a weird the whole no battery thingy.

This led to a new ex-army guy pretentiously explaining how his solar powered digital Casio was a better watch than mine.

I've been feeling far superior to most anyone whom feels they're a better person because of the watch they wear...then I saw this post and loved it:

Now I feel ashamed. I admit to being a huge hypocrite full of pretense on both beer and watches and it's all 1685's fault!

One thing I find fascinating is that people can and do drop $25,000 for a watch but we all know there is a difference in the person who wants you to know they spent $25k and spent it because they wanted to notch their belt with a $25k purchase and there are people who admire the beauty and utility and $25k is just the barrier they had to get past to own it.

I see a lot of people here who view price as just the hurdle to cross to own a delight producing machine. Some posters have to save to buy a Seiko 5 some can buy a Breguet Classique Moonphase on a whim.

What makes this my hangout is that the posters here share the joy of each of the new watch owners.

This is about my only exposure to the watch community, and I find no pretentiousness here. What few attempts I've seen in my short time here have been rebuffed, and that just makes me like OF more.

I buy Omegas because *I* like them, not because how I think others will react. I'm not out to prove anything.

Bashing Invicta is okay by me. 馃槈

While fishing through an old Photobucket account for a Rolex picture, I came across my old Invicta flame suit:

These should be issued to every moderator.

Had one or two of them too.

Now THAT'S a Rolex I'd own again. A mid 60's Zephyr (cousin of the DateJust) wouldn't be turned away either.

One of my other hobbies is a certain brand of premium sports cars, with my interest leaning towards their vintage vehicles.
Celicas, the underrated sports car of our time!
