so the obvious question...buy a discounted 1861 or pay RRP for a 3861

I thought the decision to by a Pro would be easy once I got my FOIS, as it was just a Hesalite v Sapphire question - now I like both the new and old...I dont however need a closet full of Speedys, have a Tokyo and FOIS, so a Pro would be a nice 3 some but which one...oh lord!!!??
Sapphire still looks too milky for my tastes.

Interesting caseback on the hesalite.. Seems the wording may have changed for production...

Is it possible they're using up old case-back stock? Which means a short period of this reference with "manned" versus "human" for the remainder of the production run?

It'd be the kind of subtle difference that will get collectors salivating 20 years from now.

Nope. The new caseback says "Co-axial master chronometer", which the 1861 isn't. Also, the wording has changed from "Flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions" to "Flight-qualified by NASA in 1965 for all manned space missions".

The 1861 models have now been removed from the UK catalog.

When I go onto the UK site they have changed the small picture when you click on the Speedmaster section but all the information about the Moonwatch is still the 1861 version still

"For all manned space missions", indeed. But what caught my attention was this "in 1965". Perhaps the "leak", which had "human" on the caseback was intentional. Get everybody worked up about human vs manned and let Omega get the attention away from "in 1965". Which brings us to the question - why "in 1965"? Logic answer would be that there is no NASA flight qualification for the new 3861. Or perhaps Omega would like to argue that "in 1965" was only added to keep "manned" (logic there would be that when qualified in 1965, then at that point "manned space missions" was the official term, i.e. Omega is using period correct wording)?

Australian pricing is brutal...

Hesalite - $9,575
Sapphire - $10,900

That's a $2k price hike over the previous model. From memory, around 5-6 years ago, the Hesalite Moonwatch was around $5k. 🙁

Yep, got mine in 2017 for a smidge over AU$5k.

This is a hefty increase - I know it’s an improved movement, etc, etc. but if I had $10k spare at the moment I’d be looking at other models and different brands and buying 2 or 3. Happy to stick with my 1861 for now, +6 seconds is fine by me 😉

US prices:

Hesalite with bracelet: $6300
Sapphire with bracelet: $7150

A jump, to be sure, but not as much as I thought (I was convinced that the Hesalite price would go to about $7000).

I love the clasp on the new bracelet.

If anyone has any leads on an OB/AD in the US with the hesalite bracelet in stock, I'm all ears...

Yeah, that's not so bad. This watch is about $1,000 overpriced in Australia. The "Australia tax" is biting hard on these new ones. US$6300 = AU$8165 at todays rate. Throw in another $400USD in state/local sales taxes and I'd still save $1000 if I wait until my next trip to the U.S.

Edit: And CHF5800 is ~ AUD$8550. Swatch group Australia fleecing Aussies by $1,000 over the rest of the world. Situation normal...

The gold version is lovely, it's interesting how it's only the steel sapphire version which seems to have polished sections on the bracelet when the others are totally brushed
