Is this the new Speedmaster?

What has changed in the Hesalite version to make it so unpalatable, other than the 'Manned v Human' issue on the case back I think Omega have done a pretty good job, they've even given you a DON bezel.

If you want a ceramic bezel speedy get your name down for a 321.

I just wish Omega would bring out the best watches they could currently make, without always having one eye on there next LE. Why doesn’t the new hesalite have a applied logo, why does the 321 come in a NON professional speedmaster. It’s because they will release one down the line but with something else missing.

Why hasn’t the new sapphire sandwich got a ceramic bezel with liquid metal and a adjustable clasp. I just find it frustrating that they are releasing a new speedmaster which is there flag ship watch and there’s better newer materials used in there other watches.

apologies for the rant!

Other than the movement upgrade and some retooling costs none of the changes Omega has made are costly. I don't know what a ceramic tachy insert would cost but perhaps they felt it would push the price too far past their target price. Personally I like the ceramic inserts, it gives these watches a certain permanence that an aluminum insert lacks.

Out of curiosity what do you think Omega’s flagship watch is?

I don't know. I was asking you. You've apparently done some research. I'm only familiar with seamasters and speedmasters. These are mine. There are models I'm less familiar with. I not looking to get into a pissing contest here. It was a simple yes/no question. Sorry to waste your time.

I agree with this👍

Sorry but is this Omega that's cancelling their dealership or dealer letting go because of the OB?
As of my understanding, Omega is cancelling. Please don't hold me to that, it was a brief discussion we've had.
On one hand I'm happy that apparently there's a boutique on its way, on the other the current dealer has a good customer service and often would negotiate a couple % on the price.

I don't think that Omega were planning to re-invent the watch, just have it evolve after all it is one of their most iconic watches, the new Hesalite version is very similar to the old version but with a few upgrades, the new Sapphire is a bit more of a different watch so gets a slightly different update.

Most people seem to agree that Omega have got the mix about right, however you will never please everyone all of the time, if the new Speedy is not to your liking I'm sorry, maybe Omega will realise your watch at some point in the future.

Me, I think that it is a great revamp and I am very much looking forward to picking up a Sapphire version, this will sit very nicely with my Hesalite 1861. Then I just need my name to get to the top of the order book for a 321 (not that there is much chance of that).

Good luck finding your Speedy.

😀

They should have tried to keep the hesalite as close to the original as possible but made the sapphire a more updated modern speedmaster. Instead they got Stuck in no-mans land!

Not really. One with sapphire, the other one with hesalite. What’s more to expect?

I was wondering, since they managed to shuffle things a bit without losing "flight qualified" status...and Artemis is approaching...

Is this the *next* speedy that will go to the moon?

X-33 is only qualified by ESA, and not for EVAs. Ceramic bezel and sapphire glass are not spacesuit friendly.

It's a bit of a shame that they removed the concentric circles in the subdials. The edges of the dial also look kind of soft, which I'm not a fan of. That said, Omega's watches always seem to look better in person.

I was wondering the same thing concerning the concentric circles. I am not sure if certain photos do not highlight them or if they are absent entirely in specific Speedy references. Any info on that?

I've just had a look at my 311.30.42.30.01.005 - gosh, what a mouthful - and nope, no concentric circles to be had on this reference.

Interesting. And I think that is what keeps me going back to vintage. The 145.022s have everything I dig: Long S and R, concentric circles, and a better bracelet (at least in my eyes). Ah, It will always be a tradeoff, perhaps, with Speedies.

I think Omega are also aiming for the upcoming Mars missions. Knowing Omega they'll be getting in on that.

EVA is where the Speedy really shines. Quartz/circuit based watches as a rule don't fare well during EVA. Maybe ultra shielded ones but that defeats the purpose of a simple chronograph with a velcro strap.

Batteries as well - they dont work in high and low temperatures. In an EVA when the astronaut watch is facing the sun, it gets to 126 deg C. When in the shade, it goes down to minus !! -120 deg C. No quartz, digital watches can make it in an EVA.

Well now you've just opened up an unhealthy path of speculation. What if this is the exact Marswatch reference we are all staring in the eye and we are all bickering about it deviating from the Moonwatch? Which one of us will become unimaginably rich by chucking a couple of these into their safe and going into cryosleep for the next 4 decades?

Off to dream up more get-rich-quick schemes...

Does no one have any opinion on the sunken markers? It's the biggest change to any speedmaster ever from what I can see.

The ST2 Ultraman had a similar feature. I personally liked it, thought it gave the dial a bit more texture. It's as subtle an effect in person as they come though, honestly.

As the modern ones design features tend to towards vintage design cues, I see this as another differentiating factor to vintage (like the trilogy having ‘Swiss made’ above the minute track)...just my opinion and all good in my book.
