Is this the new Speedmaster?

I like the 'old' 1861 and I like the 'new' 3861 - I am sure the little details matter to many aficionados but for the less informed watch enthusiast (like me), I think they both have their charms and to be frank in my job and life, I doubt I would have the time to notice such differences.

Yes. well said.

I have noted many times that if you hid one from 40 years ago and showed another from 20 years ago, most average folk wont be able to tell them apart.

Anyways, it makes good for good times on watch forums.

That's a great point. I wonder if our fabled astronauts every spent a minute during their day-to-day lives mulling over: "I hope the next Speedmaster that NASA issues me has kept the same font size and dial details as the one used in my previous mission..."

Or if Chuck Yeager ever thought: "do I upgrade my GMT in order to get applied white gold hour markers?"

I'm sure they just strapped on their watches as if it's any other part of their uniform or flight equipment, and went on with their lives.

I can just see them now. "This Speedmaster doesn't have the DON. WTF!!! My life depends on being able to accurately read the tachymeter."

I've been wondering that too. I would think with the price increase of the new model, that combined with this being the last "traditional" model it'll probably go up some initially and then level off once people realize that they made like a million of these over the past half century.
I went to an Omega dealer today and got a 1863 with 10% off. Noting that the dealer has to let go the brand, since, according to the dealer, we'll get an Omega Boutique in the city.

Sorry but is this Omega that's cancelling their dealership or dealer letting go because of the OB?

I don’t quite like the stepped dial.. somehow makes the dial look less clean and more busy. what are “domed hands”? Does it mean they’re curved inwards at the tips?

The stepped dial looks great in person. Yes, domed hands mean the tips are bent towards the dial which is another improvement. This is a fantastic release!

The one thing that I really like (sorry if this was mentioned before) is that finally someone got the idea to make little recess on the strap ends to fit the springbar tool. Thank you for that!

Do we have a sense of when this thing will actually be released?

Talking with the guys in my AD a few weeks back and the consensus was late spring early summer at the earliest, focus is on Snoopy at the moment.

Odd...

I was pretty sure I didn't recall asking that question...and I was right!

But nice trick to mess with my head before I've had my second cup of coffee...😀

How on earth did I manage that?

Odd, indeed...

For sure, because I would never say that. 😉

I find it odd that Omega would update the speedmaster to bring up to date with the requirements of a modern watch. - new movement, new bracelet, new dial, then put an aluminium bezel on it. I find it puzzling. If they had put a ceramic bezel with a micro adjustment on the bracelet omega would have hit it out park. Sadly it falls a little short me.

I think they keep it to preserve the original looks. I couldn't see Omega swapping the aluminium bezel on the standard hesalite moonwatch. Maybe on the sapphire. I really think a ceramic bezel would change the looks drastically

They should have tried to keep the hesalite as close to the original as possible but made the sapphire a more updated modern speedmaster. Instead they got Stuck in no-mans land!

I think the ceramic is being left for special editions to make them a bit of an upgrade on the stock watch.

Fwiw, I’d have liked to see a ceramic bezel also but get what they’ve done

What has changed in the Hesalite version to make it so unpalatable, other than the 'Manned v Human' issue on the case back I think Omega have done a pretty good job, they've even given you a DON bezel.

If you want a ceramic bezel speedy get your name down for a 321.
