Is this right decision for husbands 60th, 1961 Seamaster?

It's all personal preference on the designs, for me it would be the 166.002 out of the two.

The Cosmic looks nice but I'm no expert I'm afraid. One thing to consider is that although the seller states it was serviced but there is no paperwork to confirm this, as such you may have to factor one into your overall costs.

I'm by no means saying it hasn't been but as always, buyer be aware.

+1 on the 166.022 looks lovely and good peace of mind with the additional look over and warranty! 馃榾 if based in the UK would be great if you could see it in person before purchasing too.

Totally different watch design but our younger sons like this design over the 166.002).
No surprise there - but you will know the maturer tastes of the birthday boy best. The difference between these two watches is a great example of the design and taste watershed of the 1960s. A lot of us face this - do we want the watch that reminds us of our dad, or the one worn by our (back then) cooler older brother? In this case, most of us would say no contest, but this is one to wear and enjoy, not for collectors to fuss about, so your call. You did start out looking at birth year models though...
Btw, once you return from your dog walk, do consider posting on the pet thread! 馃榿

It鈥檚 between this and the eBay one (but no one has commented on that one as yet.

(The service papers relating to the service on this in 2020 aren鈥檛 available but seller confirms all in working order) Totally different watch design but our younger sons like this design over the 166.002).
I have and had both of the watches currently being considered. The Cosmic has a stronger wrist presence in my opinion. It is a good package maybe a bit over what I would pay. You have to consider the value of the box too. By that, I mean, presentation and actual value. But if the service is factual at 775GBP or 800GBP it would get my vote.
Make an offer!

@VickyG

If you do go for it and you have the chance of getting the correct beads of rice bracelet at a good price, I'd go for it.

So an additional 拢100 for the rice beads omega bracelet (or is it beads of rice....sorry you omega geeks - of which I am fast becoming!) but will also leave it on the leather strap as well which I know my husband will like to remove some of the weight (bidding on an original omega buckle bit on eBay).
I really don鈥檛 think I can ask or wish for any fairer than this, the dealer, Kibble Watches, James, is a delightful young man with fabulous reviews (I can see why now), has answered a load of questions & just want to help in my endeavours. It has restored my faith & I鈥檝e even seen a few I like.....but does it need to be your birthday to own an Omega?!

leave it on the leather strap
If you go forward, negotiate a different strap. That one is not suited 馃ぎ to that watch. IMHOpinion

What would you recommend, I want a soft leather / suede strap to eliminate some weight?

This is NO way an endorsement of Hodinkee. They are completely out of control price wise. They do, however, have good taste in straps.

The 166.002 has a dial color that can take a few different straps. The color you choose will make the watch a bit more dressy or a bit more casual.

Go for the classic round one. I'm a bit older than your husband and that is my choice here. BoR band for an extra 100 is fine. Find a dark blue leather in lizard with cream stitching to be period correct. Tell your son to buy the cosmic and encourage both , to swap as they see fit...... Best of both worlds. Kind regards from Oz. Achim

100GBP is a good price for a beads of rice (BOR if you want to sound cool) bracelet in descent condition. However, you should be sure that it will be long enough to fit your husband's wrist. I think this watch would look classy on a black strap. See image taken from https://www.blackbough.co.uk/produc...2-steel-vintage-wristwatch-circa-1966-wxoscs/

Good point, thank you, hubby has a small wrist so I imagine anything would need making smaller, but will check with seller when I firm up the sale.

I can give you contact info for Italian craftsmen who can make you very nice leather or croc straps at a fraction of the price -one of them will ship within 24 hours.
Alternatively, you can buy really nice straps on Ebay (brand Fluco, tan suede color) - also at a fraction of the price.
Below are some of the straps I got from one of those Italian guys- and then the Fluco suede ones.
Also a maker named 芦 LS 禄 straps on Ebay.
