I'd just like to say that...

I find the asking prices of *some* vintage watches advertised on this forum, with obviously non-original parts and condition issues, to be ludicrous.

Thanks for letting me get that off of my chest. 😁

Not only that, but has far-reaching economic consequences. Lori Loughlin, who has stated that she had frequently purchased watches on the sales forum with replaced parts and condition issues, noted that upon re-sale, she got hit so hard with losses that her intended large donations to the college her daughter wanted to attend forced her to choose cheaper, and more unethical avenues.

So what else is new? Most used cars, houses and everything else sold second-hand have prices that often seem out of line. That's the way the world works. Caveat emptor.

I'd agree. As the market matures, I think we will see good watches at good prices sell quickly. And other watches will sit... E.G. a 145.022-69 will sell right away, so another seller will price their 145.022-69 the same or a bit higher. But the watches are wildly different.

Kinda similar to the housing market in my (vintage) neighborhood.

While we're at it, can American collectors stop commenting on FS posts gushing about 5K watches being supposedly "cheap" ?

There are people in other parts of the world whose retirement money is being pumped by the state in the form of extremely high taxes, and who don't necessarily have bottomless funds to play with .... What's cheap to one may be expensive to others.

Thanks for letting me get THAT off my chest. 🫨

I am one of those poor unfortunate American who thinks 5K is a lot of money. Then again, I am not a collector. So I'll just shut up and sit down now.

Even the lower end of the market has risen hugely in the last 6 months.

Most people think spending 200 bucks on a watch is nuts.

Has anyone else noticed that the internet is being overrun by complaints? Not just Yelp and Google reviews either. It's everywhere. I guess it's because there's so much to complain about.

Fair enough, point taken, I'd meant that it was a good price compared to what I'd seen them go for privately but jumped the gun! 🙁 Actually edited in case it did inadvertently make anyone feel bad; apologies.

Mmm I think everything has to be taken in context. @Syrte I know what poverty is because my work. I deal with low income families quite often.

@shishy in your context, it's true. Some typical models u see go for 7-8k but seeing one at 5k does look cheap.

Matter of perspective and I don't think there's a need to apologise or to be aggravated.

The hobby has gotten heck lot expensive but there's probably the top 10% world population starting to really look at watches. Hence the price increase.

Is this a net positive?

One of the reasons that you always “buy” the seller first...

I think I know where you are coming from and while wealth distribution, poverty issues etc are serious matters that most of us here are luckily not too concerned about, I believe that you may be taken the issue too far here. Whether an item is cheap or not is always judged in relation to the current market price, be it a cucumber or a Rolls-Royce. Anyone (with the necessary knowledge) will be able to judge if something is cheap or expensive, even if they cannot afford it.

Thanks for your understanding, perhaps “a good price for this watch” would work for all?
Best regards

I think it’s more of a get it off my chest thread.
@Syrte was doing just that. 👍
