What makes me like Dink, nay, love Dink is because of their hype culture.
How else do we keep the prices of our collections afloat? Every single one of us benefited from Dink's hype culture. Have you check prices of your collection lately? Let just say if I see Clymer around NY, I'll buy him dinner.

What's there to hate? the dude brought in fresh meat. I'll get the BBQ sauce.
I was still working on my first course.

Well, that's one way to look at it. I'm not personally concerned with the value of my collection, so the hype culture that makes watches I want to buy more expensive, is definitely not a positive. For the investor types for which the value of a collection is of utmost importance, they are no doubt happy.

They’re a business and their goal is to make money. If someone spends over the odds, it’s not dink’s fault, just a lack of research on the buyers part. My main concern is the trust people place in their bs. I stopped reading the articles a long time ago.

J, we split Clymer's check. We see your stash man. Stop hoarding all the goodies. Leave some for the newbies. That's why we resort to buying bloated from Dink.

I’ve become disillusioned with Hodinkee over the years as they’ve gone to the hype train and become a dealer rather than enthusiast site. But I’ll still go for the new release articles since they do tend to be a bit more thorough with a lot of the specs than many others.

I have to say though, that I’ve just finally gotten around to watching that long video with Ben Clymer and Ed Sheeran, and it was excellent. I’m not a big fan of Ed Sheeran’s music but I think that video was definitely one of the better pieces of watch content I’ve seen in a while. Just a couple watch nerds talking about watches.

Exactly. I don't really pay attention to the value of the watches I have any more. I am content with what I have. I would be quite happy for the whole watch market to fall on its arse. Then I could actually buy a watch that I liked at a reasonable price rather than twice what it was 6 months ago.
@ngo516 said "Every single one of us benefited from Dink's hype culture." I disagree, the whole market has been hyped, inflated and over-exaggerated to the detriment of people who have a genuine love for watches and not the whole financial/investment side of it.

I don’t think it’s an either/or equation. I value OF more for the community’s authenticity, depth of knowledge and experience, but I still like Talking Watches and checking out H’s vintage watch drops as a reference point of sorts. I also read about the Worn & Wound Seiko 5 collab on Hodinkee and ended up pre-ordering one as a result. But I agree that it’s become a very commercial site these days and that makes me far more likely to browse it casually like a lifestyle magazine I read in a doctor’s office rather than actually read the articles.

Still love this stat. Average reader owns 7 watches and buys 3 per year. I guess they've been reading Hodinkee for 2+ years?

The dink occasionally comes up on a google search and even more occasionally, has the information I'm looking for. I've learned to corroborate that information over time, tho. They are often incorrect in their facts.

I've never even considered going to their site for casual entertainment.

Not only that, but the hype has gotten so absurd that I don't even like wearing my AP RO 15400 due to the inflated value. I know several people like this. My brother stopped wearing his Rolex Hulk and AP RO 15400. I know a couple of people from other forums that don't wear their Nautilus (Nautili?) because all of the hype and unwanted attention it draws.

I better stop wearing cheap chrome plated skin divers because that’s the hot-lick on the Dink!

LOL. You gave Dink too much credit. They don’t move the needles of RO and Nautilus bracket. That credit goes to Stern and his Tiffany x Patek 5711. That kind of hype can only be created by a much much larger beast with the cooperation of major auction houses. Dink doesn’t go there.

And no. Not wearing your RO is your choice.
My RO is too expensive to wear !…Is a “you” problem.

They helped hype the crap out of the watch industry in general.

Yes, it's my choice not to wear my AP RO . Sorry that I value my personal safety and don't want to be mugged for a watch. The value my AP RO isn't that high because I wore it as a daily for 3 years and it's beat to shit but I'd still rather not take the chance now.

photos or didn’t happen 😉

Wouldn’t you say Instagram is the main culprit of the hype culture?
I mean, 6 photos of 15202st on Dink isn’t going to convince me to shell out $140 grands for it.
But 160,000 posts on IG might get me there.

I nicked the case the first week I got it on the top right where the bracelet starts. Kind of hard to see.

This picture you can see a giant scratch on the bezel on the top because I banged it against the corner.

This picture you can see the underside of the bracelet with the links heavily worn. I wore this to Oktoberfest in Munich in 2018 as well as a bunch of other heavy drinking nights from 2017-2019.

I don’t baby my watches but at the same time I don’t want to wear something that will potentially put me in danger.
