I Still Enjoy Hodinkee

But… before joining OF I regarded Hodinkee as the authority on watches, without question.

Then I started to realize that our OF members - people associated with Fratello watches, Forstner bands, moderators, world class watchmakers and collectors of pieces that I cannot even think of ever even seeing in person - our OF members are the authority! (And on pocket watches too Canuck!)

This became obvious to me in the last year when our members spotted the wrong screw, or a Seiko crown on some high end watches for sale, and most recently JWRosenthal correctly pointing out how overpriced a chrome plated vintage watch was on Hodinkee.

But I still enjoy Hodinkee with morning coffee, after checking out OF. I look forward to their Talking Watches, articles with nice slideshows and photos and their weekly Vintage watch listings (that I will never afford). They have good videos that do serve as advertisement. (I would use videos too)

I always get a kick out of the comments sections. If the commenters could give Jack Forster a Pulitzer, they would.

So here you have it. I still enjoy Hodinkee! I just spend way more time on OF and appreciate how our members are able to spot some of their flaws.

Now come on and admit that you frequently visit Hodinkee! Obligatory watch pic (not my speedy, but on my wrist).

My issues with Dinky are not their eye watering pricing, or their tone deaf lifestyle product releases (although those do provide good canon fodder), it’s the lack of journalistic integrity (in articles) or thorough research when promoting a vintage piece. It’s trying to spin a turd as a prize.
They are selling luxury goods to people who want a well curated lifestyle- act like it!

I couldn't have said it any better. And describing their prices as "eye watering" is charitable in my opinion. If I could sell my collection at their asking prices, I could quit my day job. 😲

I still like them and use them as a resource. If you are looking up/researching a brand or watch you will come across hodinkee. Sometimes it’s comical but they still put out a load of good info. I don’t spend a lot of time on watch blogs etc (if hodinkee is still called that) but they have provided some interesting information and given me some decent knowledge.

I don't read Hodinkee articles. I pass on them if they come up in my feed. But I do enjoy reading the Hodinkee bash threads. I don't search them out, but I do read them for entertainment if I see one on OF. Once the bash threads no longer offer a truthful perspective, then I will stop reading them.

Nope, sure don't. I looked at it when I saw it mentioned, and that was about it. Nothing there for me.

I don't either. Checked out their web site a couple times and it wasn't for me.

I'm new to this disease (hobby), always wore a watch, but buying a Hamilton for my wedding in 2016 is what plunged me in deep.

Anyway, in the beginning it was all Hodinkee for me. But OF/Youtube have largely replaced Hodinkee in my life, and I check them occasionally for any Omega content or keeping up with Jack's articles. Thats about it. 95% of my research results in hits from previous OF posts. It's been a treasure trove of information.

I still look at them for new release curiosity stuff on occasion. They do have their pulse on the industry for the most part and I just wish they behaved in the manner to which they have propped themselves up

I have never enjoyed the writing style or the way the information is provided. It seemed . . . superficial? I have very rarely visited there on purpose or for any specific data, information, or opinion.

I like Dink. I consumed their articles and videos, for entertainment.
I'll also say this. The entire watch market is inflating, what $ seems outrageous to you might not be for a newbie. The learning curve in vintage is stupid steep. I should know. How many posts we have seen from hit-n-run members asking "is this real?" in the last few months?

I'll balance out some of the $$hate. They sold this 116518 for $30k (maybe 5 months ago). Which is insane, because it's $45k+ everywhere else, at the time (much more now ~$60k). I'm not sure if someone at Dink f-up pricing on this or was it intentionally priced way way below market, but this fine-as-hell, best looking modern Daytona 116518 was an editorial article. I still hate myself for passing on this. God damn it.

Edit to add: Content is expensive. Building a loyal fan base is expensive. Their vintage offerings are expensive, but I say it's worth it, from my newbie's perspective. When Dink buyers ready to flip their pieces, they will likely get their money back because it was originally sold by Dink. Value retention is there. It's a viable and thriving business.

I think that is exactly what Hodonkey is counting on...

I don't believe I've ever gone directly to their site. I have sometimes clicked on things to it that are posted on forums, like this one.

The lack of integrity is what bother me the most. Does anyone recall Jack Forster calling a certain Vacheron chronograph the most important release for collectors in years (or something similar) only a short time before there was a Hodonkey version of the same watch released? Pump and dump...

A younger more inexperienced TwoCats flirted with Hodinkee once upon a time but as I grew to understand more I saw it for the ladyboy trap that it was……..

I enjoyed this video by Forster:

The excessive sales doesn't bother me as much. Maybe it's sad, but this Amazon, Ebay, Etsy world we live in has lowered my expectations. I suppose it's better to be annoyed with Hodinkee for pumping sales as it means you still care, as opposed to my cynicism.

The thing that annoys me the most is Clymers clothes. That, and he looks like the guy who sells stocks. He can't help that, but he can stop wearing white socks.

I echo your sentiments- I enjoy talking watches and get excited every time I see a new video posted. However, I will say that as the years have gone by they are more miss than hit. Sure there was the occasional episode early on that enjoyed less than others- Pras episode 1 comes to mind, although episode 2 was better- but now they have become more frequent and echo some of the issues that many of us in the passionate watch collecting world detest and that is an impassive focus on all the same old hype watches with zero substance behind them with regards to their selection or inclusion. The initial emotional appeal in response to images of ultra high end jewelry attenuates over time when observed in isolation absent from human connection. I always tell people I came for the watches but I stayed for the stories.

What they do excel at is producing a high quality product, whether that be a story on their app, a photo on IG or a video on IG. The production as far is the watch world is concerned is top notch. Other channels and individuals can obviously rival them in knowledge but I find the products lacking with regards to visual and audio quality that inevidably leads me to stray away. I believe its less important in audio formats such as podcasts- significant lots (watches) led by Eric Wind is a really enjoyable listen but compared side by side to Hodinkee radio the difference in production quality quickly becomes apparent. All that to say I still enjoy Hodinkee, just less these days.

I like reading Hodinkee when there were new releases. They were usually pretty good on having lots of pictures, size dimensions, and prices along with a brief writeup. They cover a lot of product from a bunch of different brands. I don't really read them on a day to day basis or even on a month to month basis.

What makes me like Dink, nay, love Dink is because of their hype culture.
How else do we keep the prices of our collections afloat? Every single one of us benefited from Dink's hype culture. Have you check prices of your collection lately? Let just say if I see Clymer around NY, I'll buy him dinner.

What's there to hate? the dude brought in fresh meat. I'll get the BBQ sauce.
