I parted company with my employer at the end of last year. Still grappling with the irony of having less money and more time to find vital additions to the collection to spend it on...

Good luck with the hunt

Easy solution: go for the undervalued vintage pieces you can find on eBay and elsewhere.

I've only been addicted for a few years, but it's interesting to see how much the first little inexpensive ones that I thought had value are now bringing.

With time, it's not hard to find 'diamonds in the rough'.

Check out estate sales and thrift houses; it's quite fun, and usually very easy on the wallet!

Thanks. My husband and I both practice law. It's a hard habit to break.
Practice is a noun, practise is the verb, so you work at a law practiCe where you both practise law.

I would personally say that there's a large difference between those who do what's necessary to protect a way of life, and those who profit from unnecessary warfare. It's not a black or white issue; I have the utmost respect for our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines while despising the politicians who send them off to die in the greedy quest for oil or defense contractor profits.

I work at a defense contractor now. Apparently dropping bombs in combat has qualified me to sell them now.

You gotta work, and I don't judge. Our defense contractors themselves have done some great things. My problem begins when you're the one making the decision to bomb people mostly based on the stock you hold in the bomb-maker 😉

I guess I shouldn't say what business I'm in then. It ain't unicorns and rainbows. More of the kinetic application of diplomacy type thing. Takes all types to make the world go 'round.

The gang upstairs were a little too "it's not our problem who gets sold what, and what they do with it, we just provide a market place"... combined with googling pictures of the main show they run, and reading attached articles about third world dictators on shopping sprees for arms in London, with my former employer picking up the tab for "travel and entertainment".

The abdication of any responsibility, combined with the desire to do anything that would get potential buyers through the door, no matter where from: that I have a problem with.

That makes sense. We are governed by the International Trade in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and also by our ethics, so we don't sell to just anyone. I do see some bad actors out there that don't share our same concern.

I understand your move Chris and agree with what you decided to do.

As an ex-mil person (28 years) and working for BAE Systems for another 22 years, I saw all aspects of the arms business (as well as all of the dodgy stuff that went on behind the scenes).

That said, even if I don't share your views, I am morally obliged to ensure that you can still express them.

A simplistic view of that rationale is explained by the quote, often attributed to Voltaire, but actually written by an English lady, the writer Evelyn Beatrice Hall. I adopted it as my mantra many many years ago, and still hold that belief.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".

Sorry to hear that Chris: bad luck. Probably best you draw the line before you find yourself slipping brown envelopes to shady characters whilst shepherding them round London's gentlemens entertainments.

Who called the Spelling Polise?

Interesting point about the Queen's English, didn't know that... but in America we practice in practices.

I'm not sure a cheese eater is a thing... well not a thing you get paid for.

Becoming a Yeoman warder (Beefeaters) is pretty hardcore:

  1. Be a former Warrant Officer, class 1 or 2, (or the equivalent rank in other services) and in exceptional circumstances, a Staff Sergeant, from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force or Royal Marines.
  2. Hold the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal
  3. Have served within the regular armed services for at least 22 years
And then there's fierce competition... and you have to be a history buff. 😀

So basically you have to be old and boring ... I wonder how many beefeaters are members here...

They're actually pretty awesome - they run tours of certain parts of the Tower of London - very engaging, enthusiastic people.

Billy the Beefeater on Instagram is an absolute card. 👍

And they guard the Crown Jewels
Well that and the 3 feet thick steel doors and armoured glass...
Now there's some pretty astonishing 'acquisitions' from the former colonies.

I'm not a Brit. Can't you tell by my accent? We Yanks use "practice" correctly. 😗

Thanks Jim - it was a tough decision to walk away from a paying job after three months out of work, however, spending 40 hours a week there was proving challenging, and I couldn't see myself looking back on the role and feeling proud of it.

Sometimes you have to make tough decisions, even if they are a little painful in the short term.

That said, day one, I've spoken to two recruiters, have 10 roles that I'm interested in and currently researching before applying, have a draft version of my CV out for review, and have returned to Yoga after a 6 year break.

I refuse to let this beat me. 😀

That would be the Queen's Guard and The Royal Fusiliers... or as I tend to think of them, the ones that look dangerous and carry big guns. 😗

I didn't expect anything less from the Queen's finest ;-)

Good call on your part with leaving the job ... I once was hired Dic 4th and gave my notice leaving just after x-mas ( Crap 'Is Us type of company) ... one of the things life has showed me was to make an inevitable cut fast and clear.

plus you are young and good looking ... 😁
