How do you place your watch when not wearing it at night??

Toss it in the bin and start with a new fresh one the next morning. What else would I do?

Crown up.

I'd make a 6"x6"x1" open box from virgin rain forest teak and stick thin sheets of Sorbothane Shock Isolating compound to the walls and floor of the box, and then line the whole inside of the box with baby rabbit belly skin (fluffy side out).

You have to use five baby rabbits though, so don't skimp, as there's only enough on one belly to do one side and you need the largest for the base.

Or you could just use a nice soft leather watch tray.

At some forums, the more experienced members won't really share their secrets. It's good to know the members are more forthcoming here.

In all seriousness, you should experiment with the way different positions affect your watch's timekeeping. If it gains a couple seconds during the day while wearing it, but loses a couple seconds if placed on it's side overnight, one cancels the other out. I've had a few watches (a couple with ETA 2892 variations) that were as accurate as a quartz watch after I learned how to use positional variance to my advantage.
^^ This. My Speedy loses a few seconds per day in normal wear, but gains at a higher rate when left crown-up, so I leave it in that position on my nightstand overnight every few days to bring it back up to correct without having to actually adjust it.

It's different for every individual caliber. What works for your Speedmaster won't work the same for any other watch.

Yes, that's why I wrote "my Speedy"

I float my APs, Piagets, IWCs, and JLCs in an anti gravity vacuum chamber to minimize any potential damage. Brands like Omega and Breitling are stored on cushions in a winder. All the riff riff and hoi polloi just get put in a drawer.

I only get to do #2 and #3 above, because I don't own any watches in category #1...

I'm with the riff raff and either sling the cheaper quartz jobbies in a box (or drawer) and the autos in my winder if not to be used for a few days.

How does one look at the lume all night when your not wearing it. 😲

And don't get me started about how I set the date change with the atomic clock and 6 different phone apps each midnight

What I ended up doing was using the Hairspring app for iPhone to figure out how my watch runs in different positions. My po geneneally runs -3.5 secs a day, but if I leave it crown up, it gains about 1.2 secs a day according to the app. Now I leave it crown up in the night and only lose about two secs total a day! I’m not sure this is the best way, but it works for me.

Here - you'll need this introduction to mechanical watches:

http://www.watchtalkforums.info/forums/thread22496.html

It's a "Watches for Dummies" kind of guide. Look under PERFORMANCE & CALIBRATION for "Positional Error".

I’ve liked most of the “Dummies” books I’ve used, but I always hated the word “dummies.” Years ago as a young associate working with a team of attorneys on a patent case involving digital cameras, I wanted to bring the senior partner quickly up to speed with an intro to the technology. I had a good book “Digital Photography for Dummies,” but hesitated to give the big guy a book for dummies. At the suggestion of one of the other juniors, I pasted over the word “Dummies” on the cover with a label “Judges,” before handing over the book. The team got a good laugh, and the senior guy appreciated the efficient way to get the basic knowledge he needed.

Now when I loan someone a “Dummies” book, I always tell them to think “judges” - a smart person who just happens not to be familiar with that particular topic.

Very clever. This will help one day.

I leave my speedie face up on my bedside table (on a eyeglass cloth). The Tag and Oris are in their boxes in a bedroom safe, and the swatch and seiko are on the bottom of a drawer that I have been meaning to clean out for a while now.

I have avoided this thread ... but 2 martinis with Mrs S and I ventured in. I was not disappointed! Glad to have you back Dennis! Did not even need to pull out the Pulp Fiction GIF.

What do you mean by keep them on the machine??? You mean something that keeps the watch rotating? I guess that makes sense for automatics but will not help me in with the speedy!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent <$50 watch box? No more than 6 slots should be sufficient. TIA!

The watch I’m wearing that day, sits inside an omega watch tray.
Here it is when I first got it, funny that within a year those two watches are no longer in my collection, lol

My collection has a watchbox with a winder.

Imagine that! What will they think of next? 😜

Trust me on this - get MORE than 6 slots. You WILL need the room. 😉

Real WIS only buy watches with a squirrel cage tourbillon.
