Help, should I buy this 2531.80?

Here is my 2351.80 with white/lime green markers from the late 90s/early 00s. I can grab other ones in different light conditions. Believe the markers are tritium, was right around the time of the changing over to Superluminova.

Easiest way to tell is a lume shot. Tritium-green, Superluminova-blue.

That looks slam dunk SuperLuminova to me. Tritium goes beige and usually a mismatch develops with the hands. Does it glow at all in the dark? If so it isn’t tritium. Post 1998 are all SL. The glow for both was green, blue wasn’t used until the current 4th gen model AFAIK.

For the apparent condition and the presence of box and papers, I would agree. There's a bit of a premium in those things.

The only question I would have is how well it is running and when it was last serviced. If it is running well but the service history is unknown, I would probably take it to a boutique and have a water resistance test done and budget the cost of a service in the next 5 years or so.

A bit of encouragement for @OmegaBorder :

that’s a good recommendation. It would break my heart to buy a brand new watch only to send it out for service for a few months. But if the price is right, it may be worth it.

The lume plots are starting to turn a slightly cream color, not the stark white. The lume glows when first charged, but fades as 25+ lume does.

OP - Don't buy the watch. If you're not convinced with 3 pages of replies nothing is going to convince you. I would just move on.

Edit: pretty sure you're right about the SMP timeline.
Edit: as of 2012 they were using blue and green!

First seamaster with blue lume was the PO LMLE, which has all blue lume. About 2009. Not sure about the SMPc, but the SMPc chrono had differentiated lume. The 2014 heritage had the blue green setup as well

Yes. Now you mention it I had a SMPc, now gone, and I think you are correct in that the hands were different colours. Regardless, it’s all green on the 2531.80 whatever the material. The lume on those isn’t hugely bright even on the SL version. The hands in particular can be hard to see.

Update on this: I purchased the watch!

See below some macro pictures I tried to make.
I am no expert, but I think the watch is in good condition and the case looks unpolished. Let me know what you think!

Regarding my original concern: the markers always look green, they never look white like many pictures I see on instagram and reddit. Not even in direct sunlight.

But overall I am happy with the watch.

This was my first pre-owned purchase, so thanks to everyone who replied and helped me. Especially @ErichPryde @502 to right and @padders!

Cheers.

Quesyion- Is there corrosion on the hour hand? It doesn't look completely polished on one of those images.

Thank you for this. Please see attached. Do you see any?

I have 3 days left until chrono24 releases the escrow, to raise any issues.

Thanks for the help!

It was specifically this image, and the hour hand:

I can't see the same effect in the other images in this could just be a reflection. If you have the watch in hand, you should be able to tell.

Omega replaces these polished handsets if it goes through them as a service and an independent watchmaker may not. That can sometimes result in little scratches.

Case looks good for sure! What are the first four of the serial?

Yeah, I think it was just a reflection.

First 4 of the serial are 8035. Does that tell you anything?

According to the papers it was bought on christmas 2002 in italy.

According to the 1120 serial information collected here and on watchuseek, that tells me that your date is spot on. 8035 would have been late 2002 sales.

Again, congratulations!

Can't believe you don't have one yet tbh!

It’s really the best of all SMP in my opinion! This or the Casio Royale if one wants a bit more dressy (in my case the opposite as I also own a speedy 3861 and an Aqua Terra).

The rest are too thick, main issue I see.

Eh, I think I felt that way a bit before I decided to pick one up, but I wouldn't sell either one. They're just very, very different watches in terms of style and visual appearance, with completely different strengths and weaknesses.

I can't imagine selling either my 41 or 42 mm SMP.
