In my experience Royal Mail is thrust worthy.
Never had any issues what so ever with them.

Can I ask what service did you use @Northernman and how much did you pay?

Also, what kind of cover/ insurance do you get if the piece goes missing?

Cheapest registered service.
I do not insure extra. Maybe a bit of a gamble, but in general I believe in keeping things discrete. Marking the shipment at a high value might only draw more attention to it IMO.
In your case the watch is not very valuable in terms of money, and money is the only thing added cover might pay you back. Memories are invaluable, and hence may never be covered.
Royal Mail "signed for" service would be my preferred way.
Others might think differently.

Cheers.

Holy thread resurrection!

Finally dropped my Omega off to John Senior at you guys' recommendation.

He opened up the case so I could get a pic- appears to have never been serviced since it was made in 1964!

Not surprising then that its running fast...

Will update when its back in a couple of weeks. I did ask him to give it a light polish- sacrilege to some Im sure, but I wanted it freshening up. The dial will be left alone, as will the original crown.

So excited to get it back, in the meantime if anyone has recommendations on where to get a strap with an Omega clasp/ buckle they would be more than welcome (16mm lug width). 馃榾

Hi Alpha,

No, hes not unfortunately.

Id spoken to him several months ago and discussed the watch, the work that needed done and got a quote. I only got round to being able to drop it to him recently and he told me he didnt do this kind of work any more but since he had already offered a quote he would (very kindly) honour it.

Sorry. :-(

So the decision has been made to go with John, satisfied with everything Ive read about him.

Can I ask what other forum users would recommend doing re postage? I will be sending the watch to him, but collecting in person as by the time he's done the work Ill be in his neck of the woods anyway.

Is Royal Mail recorded/ special enough? Never sent anything worth a bit of money through the post before!
Insure it and ask that someone sign to acknowledge receipt of it! How fun for you to come across this! Good for you!
