I would be curious to know how many vintage watches are sold to dealers (not by dealers). I have listed a few watches on ebay in the past 6 months (I had them in multiples or they did not fit thematically with the rest). I was surprised by the fraction of those watches that were purchased by dealers. This includes watches that were idle for some time on ebay, meaning that they were not in the no-brainer buy-it-now category. At auctions I also find that I often lose to dealers (by definition, at the upper-limit of the market range in terms of value). Are they stocking up? How is this sustainable?

I've observed the same thing. Even relatively mediocre examples purchased by well known dealers, at 350 something -- and then offered at 1800 of the same currency (dollar, euro, whatever). And to understand how sustainable it is you only need to go on Instagram and monitor conversations on this sub-forum over the past 6 months.

Dealers need buyers. Buyers are feeling wealthy, and are willing to spend on collectibles of all types. This has something to do with it:

I think those who caught the crypto wave might be cashing out and using it to buy expensive things. I bailed out of the wave pretty early but still made some pocket money.

Oh let's not go there! Spirits and Wine...even sillier. At least you still have a watch to wear, not a bottle of booze you dare not drink!
