All good advice to protect yourself in case something goes wrong. Things do get lost and this is increasingly a problem with the constant privatisation of delivery services.

I have found many of them to be terrible at best, on top of that you are importing an item from the USA to France so the French customs may get involved in the transaction and if they do and you do not have absolutely cast iron paperwork, ie Bill, receipt of payment and shipping cost then you will have big problems...Believe me.

The seller should have simply charged you the extra in the purchase price and then you would not have this dilemma. Good luck and I hope it all turns out right for both parties.

This discussion pops up on here pretty regularly. Those that suggest some kind of buyer protection is a good idea if dealing with an unknown seller are talking good sense, and this sounds like one of those occasions. I would add though that a seller who agrees to payment by either Credit card or Paypal Merchant, opens themselves up to fraudulent chargebacks so is just as much at risk as a buyer who buys without protection. Thus a seller can have a legitimate reason for being reluctant to accept payment by this method, I certainly would think twice about agreeing to be paid this way if I didn't know the buyer or the buyer didn't have history!
