The commercial potential of in-play breaks and the chunking of the game into quarters is nothing new of course where e.g. NFL audiences are concerned, and FIFA will have loved that of course. But I just wondered whether any seasoned European (or other) observers were noticing any differences on the field - momentum swings or tactical switch-ups, say - arising from this new-to-soccer thing.
I am not following a lot of football usually but those in- play breaks do have influences on the games through the extra opportunity given to the (good) coaches to adapt/correct their organisation. So the winning teams benefiting from this will be happy the others less … but as it is not unfair it is difficult to complain. So back to the annoying additionnal advertising for those watching…

I have no issue with the “hydration” breaks. Call them quarter breaks if you like. I know that these are some of the best athletes in the world, but some of the feels like temperatures around here have been up around 110F (43C) and it doesn’t cool off much at night. Let’s get the best from these guys.

I also have never understood why the clock runs continuously in soccer and they let the referee figure out the extra time at the end. It always seems to be a mystery to everyone.

Hire an official timekeeper to stop the clock on fouls, free and corner kicks, goal resets and injuries. That way everyone knows how much time has elapsed (or is left). If they can do it in hockey, they can figure it out in soccer.

Agree with your idea of Time recording (they could use their chrono ;-)) as they do in other sport like rugby. I guess the new rules to avoid loss of wasted time during players’ changes and « touches » will make this evolutions even easier.

If that is a real issue, then just put a separate play clock on those plays. If a player is awarded a kick or throw in and can’t execute it in 10 or 15 seconds, turn it over to other team. Let the coaches call a 30 sec. timeout for substitutions. They are limited by rule anyway.

When both clocks are displayed at the stadium, there is transparency to all.

I think a lot of Europeans (and others) tacitly agree with some or all of this, but there's understandably decades-old inertia (aka "tradition") there, so it takes newcomers - like Americans, say - to just come right out and call it. Ironically, sadly, there's now a chance that fans will reject positive innovations simply because they are suspicious of FIFA, or corporates, or America (you can see the Venn diagram here).

The water breaks are ridiculous and ruin the flow of the game. Money grab under the guise of player safety. Thats my opinion.
Since my attention span can wane at times, I thought somebody was pulling my leg when they said there was a water break. I looked at the TV and it was a commercial. I said how in the hell can you have a commercial. Water break. Water break ? WTF? Unbelievable

Let’s not turn a 90 minute game (plus extra) into a 3 hour debacle like NBA games NFL games. MLB Baseball saw the problem with 3 and 4 hour games. Soccer/Futbol is best known for for simplicity of rules.

Time outs? Water breaks? TV replay challenges ? Give me a break.

Futbol, run the clock, play the game. Get it done and get to the real deal of drinking

Good plan !

Like a shot clock or pitch clock, excellent idea. And one of my personal favorites to avoid injury simulation time delay ;
let the medics enter the pitch if a player is roling and screaming for his mom over a little cheek pinch while play continues without him ! It will be a fast healing i guarantee.
I thought somebody was pulling my leg when they said there was a water break
In that heat it is a good thing, but abused ofcourse for a tactical change etc. Which already became standard practice when a team was under pressure by having the goalie simulating an injury and during his treatment all the players assembled at the coach box for instructions.
See my point above.

The thing i hate most about it is that the broadcaster here dont use the break for re runs or analysis with 3 or more "studio commentators" present but show us cat food and womens hygene product commercials... wtf.

On to te more imortant stuff.... Netherlands vs Sweden do-or-die game this evening !
@hansaboy are you ready for it all dressed in yellow and blue yet like i am in my ugly orange shirt and nice watch ??

If we play smart like in the 1st half against Japan we should win this, if we fumble we give Sweden the chance to counter with that nasty pair of strikers they have, Isak and Gyökeres. Have a good game !

Rugby does that and I love that, also their referees are not accepting whining and are respected.

Nice racing dial MKII @Ron_W, but a bit too sedate for the occasion IMO. After you finish painting your face orange and donning your big floppy orange hat slip on a Seiko Monster Gen 1 to match and intimidate the Swedes.

@hansaboy you can sport a True Pogue as worn on SkyLab 4 and launch your team atop the group.

Good luck to all! 🍺⚽️

Some of the added time is a judgement call by referee if they feel one team is taking too much time with throw in or corner kick etc. they just silently push the little pusher on the soccer timer that tallies extra time. That way they can prevent one team from running down clock. And there is a little extra drama in stoppage time. Let the other sports have the ticking clock, they have play stoppages and timeouts but for running time with no stoppages this works.

Well played USA, from an Aussie fan. Too quick, too skilful and too street smart for us. It didn't help that coach Tony Popovic got his team selection wrong. Having your best forward (Irankunda) starting on the bench? Huh?! The subs did well to inject some life into the team but by then it was too little too late. Always start the match with your strongest team, Tony. Paraguay now shapes as a must win for us.
USA's best asset was the big, dumb Aussie fullback. He had an own goal and flubbed an easy tap in.

Happy to see the 3 -0 netted as Sweden caused us a lot of problems at the end of the first half.

Switzerland scored all their 4 goals against Bosnia and Herzegovina after the second water break as the Swiss coach tactically waited for the three subs until the break so he could give directions. He explained it during the aftermatch interview: If he had made the substituitions prior to the break, the other coach could have reacted during the break.

Similar story with Germany today with 2 late goals with substitutes after break.
