Btw what do we all think of the water breaks? Four quarters by another route. Is there maybe a case for the tactical timeout this provides?
Looks like the USA:AUS referee should have hydrated better...

Well I avoid betting as I always bet with my heart but it payed off this time. I do like how soccer brings the world together regardless how briefly. I always thought it would be music that brought us together, country road.

The water breaks are ridiculous and ruin the flow of the game. Money grab under the guise of player safety. Thats my opinion.

As long as boxing remains legal any rules like that look poor for a sport.

Well boxing is my favorite sport. With the goal being to give your opponent a traumatic brain injury other sports take player safety too far at times I fear.

While it was necessary in Qatar now it’s just money grab by FIFA and Fox and other broadcasters

The commercial potential of in-play breaks and the chunking of the game into quarters is nothing new of course where e.g. NFL audiences are concerned, and FIFA will have loved that of course. But I just wondered whether any seasoned European (or other) observers were noticing any differences on the field - momentum swings or tactical switch-ups, say - arising from this new-to-soccer thing.

Thousands of Scotland fans march to Fenway Park for baseball game in between their 2 World Cup games in Boston.
While many were going to their first game and had little knowledge of rules, they impressed American fans with nonstop singing and partying. Fenway Park reportedly nearly ran out of beer, and Boston pubs needed emergency deliveries directly from local breweries to resupply.
Get ready Miami they are coming to you for next match!

But I just wondered whether any seasoned European (or other) observers were noticing any differences on the field - momentum swings or tactical switch-ups, say - arising from this new-to-soccer thing.
I’m not observant enough to gauge if there’s any tactical advantage to these breaks, or if there are any constructive dynamics in the ensuing gameplay, but I’m sure the corporates will defend them and deem them necessary 😉

They didn’t go to watch baseball. It was just an excuse for a piss-up. In Scotland, Saturday is for fighting, interrupted by two halves of football.

Well played USA, from an Aussie fan. Too quick, too skilful and too street smart for us. It didn't help that coach Tony Popovic got his team selection wrong. Having your best forward (Irankunda) starting on the bench? Huh?! The subs did well to inject some life into the team but by then it was too little too late. Always start the match with your strongest team, Tony. Paraguay now shapes as a must win for us.

I have no issue with the “hydration” breaks. Call them quarter breaks if you like. I know that these are some of the best athletes in the world, but some of the feels like temperatures around here have been up around 110F (43C) and it doesn’t cool off much at night. Let’s get the best from these guys.

I also have never understood why the clock runs continuously in soccer and they let the referee figure out the extra time at the end. It always seems to be a mystery to everyone.

Hire an official timekeeper to stop the clock on fouls, free and corner kicks, goal resets and injuries. That way everyone knows how much time has elapsed (or is left). If they can do it in hockey, they can figure it out in soccer.
