What kind of championship gets decided this way? An insult to the players, if you ask me.
Let them play the 120 minutes and then it goes to sudden death, first real goal wins. Hockey and American Football have this right.

At one time, cup competitions were subject to a replay, if no-one won in the standard 90-minute time.
Then they introduced the full extra time so that it wasn't a hit or miss outcome and then plus penalties because they felt everyone wanted a conclusion on the day.
The penalties are because no-one wanted to see bunch of first-class footballers dropping like flies through cramp and exhaustion. (which used to happen much more often before top-class footballers became significantly fitter)

Don't get me wrong - I really don't like any competition decided on penalties (I would much rather have a replay) but it is preferable to players falling down through cramp or fatigue - which genuinely did used to happen a lot in days gone by.
It's not much different to tennis matches being decided on the 'super tiebreak' nowadays instead of playing to the death in the third or fifth set.

What if all the substituted players are injured or just plain knackered?
It all gets much too complicated.
Hence, returning to the sub-optimal current solution.

·The deserving champions were crowned even though it was tense as it seemed like Argentina might steal the game somehow. I think Messi and team were spent too many extra time endings and the magic faded.
Ive never watched so much of a World Cup with time zones and work, this was a treat. Just hope they don’t expand to 64 teams and they drop the silly hydration ad money grab.
