-1 for the VAR as that was not a dive, no bad intention - especially considering the location as you mention - and being already booked with nothing to gain by faking a dive - it is simply a case of an off balance landing of his right foot ( his ankle could have twisted - been there ) which he lifted to prevent a possible injury. His leg touched the Argentine and there was no foul, as not all contact is a foul.
Just because that card was wrongly given does not mean it must be transferred to the other player, that is a silly rule. That is what we get now that the VAR can also interfere with yellow card offences instead of only the grave errors, red card stuff and goals.

To make this a yellow card offence that leads a send-off just adds to the conspiracy theory and we dont need that. But if one card gets suspended and the others are not, and 27 cameras show the ball touching a cable that influences play is not judged by VAR, what am i to believe ?

Sorry for Switzerland, Egypt, Norway etc etc being the victimes of what is becoming a jury sport, and with the top countries making the semi` you will lose all their top referee`s so these errors will become even worse i fear.
I hope England crushes the Argentine for Karma sake, and i prefer Spain over France, but may the best football playing team win please.

+1 for VAR. Embolo's dive in the Switzerland - Argentina was a disgrace. He cost his team a real chance of advancing. Why in the world would you dive like that when you are already on a yellow. He wasn't even in the box, so little to gain there. He is going to have some unhappy team-mates and coaches.
Agree that the dive wasn’t smart at that point, as Switzerland had just equalized and had great momentum. But he had been repeatedly tackled hard before by Argentina with no wistle ever going off.
There was one scene where he ran alone towards the Argentine goal and was checked/pushed from behind/side by defender Martinez, and goalkeeper Martinez went for his legs. Why no VAR challenge then?

And Lopez who already had a yellow card then later kicked the ball away when a free kick was awarded to Switzerland. He should have also gotten a second yellow card and sent off then for bad sportsmanship.
Very inconsistent refereeing, also noticed by non Swiss

I re-watched it, and I just don't see the evidence for what you are saying. However, we don't have to agree on this to remain friends. I do pretty much agree with much of the rest of your post though. Lots of inconsistencies and poor uses of VAR.

👍The fall was too clumsy , he just lost balance i think. You see his right foot almost bend double on landing and as he lifts it he then touches the Argentine player. Intentional dives almost always include a "jump" of some sort propelling the player while already screaming and arm waving at the ref. And that kind of behaviour is now almost completely banned from the sport by VAR which i think is great, no sports benefits from cheaters. Except maybe the Houston Astros.

Which is a pita, several matches deserved a little more fair battle.

It will never end so long as VAR is given the ability to overturn calls made by the referee’s judgement and “find” penalties that the referees didn’t see.

FIFA should implement a system similar to the NFL or NHL where the replay must show “clear and convincing” evidence that a call is wrong before it can be overturned. In addition, replays cannot implement a minor penalty or judgement call that the referee did not originally make on the field with the exception of violent penalties (spearing in American Football or goalie interference in hockey).

The VAR have inserted themselves into the games in an intrusive and negative manner causing major inequities and determining outcomes.
I agree w gatorcpa that their scope needs to be limited. I think the referees think they need to always accept the VAR opinion as none seem willing to overrule VAR.
And if they can detect minor incidental contact and call fouls how did they miss the ball hitting the camera wire in England-Norway, that was clear on multiple video replays. 😱

Exactly this. I was likewise thinking of the NHL's use of video replay. You often hear the reference "they've gone to Toronto for review" as that's hockey central. Perhaps it's my Canadian bias, but the standards seem more, well, standardized.

That said, it looked more like a dive to me given the 100x they replayed that moment the other day. Speaking of hockey, it reminded me of Alexandre Burrows of the Vancouver Canucks, the gold medalist in diving. 😎

I am hoping for something like a 4 -3 spectacle, or 3- 4 .
Spain does not like to play defensive football and will seek the attack, Williams can play i hope, but we also need the French to show some cojones to make it a historic match.

WTF VAR disappointing again, Mbappé lashing out at the keeper should have been red for sure.

I'm no expert (sometimes that helps) but I thought Spain were just superb. Whenever France had a pair, los Rojos had a triplet and passed around them. Their speed and accuracy of passing across all distances was wonderful. OK, Yamine LamaI should leave the tackling duties to his defenders, but hey, he's showing up now.

I do feel this was the final, and Spain won it. Mbappé's frustration and Dembele's absence came from that. Deschamps should retire a proud man, but his excellent team was #2 today.

France was simply outplayed today. It didn't help that some of their best players seemed to have an off day, with Michael Olise being the most striking example of that, but you can't get around the fact that Spain played particularly well. I just wish France could have shown them a bit more resistance, as I'm sure they're capable of.

We have that already with the Argentines. Especially with Lionel Messi spending his retirement years here with InterMiami.
