·If that is the case, then allow teams to bring back one player previously substituted after the 1st 30 minute OT period.
I thought the object of the tournament is to determine the best team, not the best shooters from 12 yards out.

When golden goal was trialled some years ago, it led to very defensive, boring periods of extra time as teams were wary of conceding without the opportunity to equalise. As such, it didn’t reduce penalty shootouts.

Couple their spoiling tactics with their ability for rigorous and disciplined defending and you end up with the stultifying game we had yesterday.
It’s a shame that a great player like Messi has to play for such an awful team.
In many ways it was quite fitting that Fernandez’s appalling two-footed ‘tackle’ essentially denied Argentina the opportunity to reach their goal of @gatorcpa ’s favourite crap-shoot penalty shoot-out.
Well done Spain for saving football from pro-wrestling.

I found out yesterday that each team has 26 players on its roster. Only 16 will play if all allowed substitutions occur. I would assume that most of the others, if not all of them, are currently under contract to elite European teams and are making millions of Euros.
There should be plenty of talent available if the golden goal rule was used in 15 minute periods after 120 and allowing an extra substitute every period.
It was clear from the beginning that Argentina knew the Spanish team was marginally better and their only chance was to muck it up for 120 minutes and hope to get lucky with PK’s. This game plan didn’t work out only because one player forgot he had a yellow and made a dumb play.
I think you would have seen a more exciting game if Argentina knew that they would need to play to the bitter end.
As fun as the whole tournament was to have here in North America, I doubt soccer in the U.S. will ever capture the imagination of enough of the top athletes here when you have championship games like yesterday where an inferior team can win by merely surviving.
I generally found the entire match rather disappointing.

It is a pity we did not see France play Spain in the final. That may have been a better game than what we saw last night.

·Spain dispatched France in the semifinal with superior tactics and skill. I think England might have given them a decent game, unless they employed their ill advised defensive game as in 2nd half v Argentina.

··Wow! Custom title... coolWhat an absolute #%t show of intro and half time show. A tradition at Super Bowl, not at the World Cup. I seriously hope this was the last time it happened. People come to watch football not Tom Cruise rambling about the beauty of it.

·The right team won the competition. the right goalkeeper won the golden glove, the right player won best player, the right youngster won young player and the right forward won the golden boot (particularly for smiling and laughing at all the pathetic Paraguay wind ups, pure class). The rest, extended half times, quarters wtf!, etc was all noise and bullshit that hopefully will never be seen again. I liked the big flags though.

As Australian sports fans we give the English and Kiwis a hard time in particular, but if one of us went this far we'd expect them to be locked up.
