What happened here please?

I thought this is a forum where members can discuss and exchange on watches or ask questions that can be answered by other members.

Questions are simply an important part of this forum and answering them very often leads to new insights for everyone involved.

A question was not asked politely or exhaustively enough? So what? If you don't like a question or the way it was asked, you don't have to answer it. Everyone can decide for themselves. But whoever responds to a question should be polite and respectful of the other. Answering rudeness with rudeness is certainly not the way to go.

From a single question (that I have not seen myself), this thread has become a debate (and partly a dispute) that I am not used to in this forum. In my opinion, personal disputes should be resolved via pm.

After all, questions similar to those of the OP are asked every day not only by new, but also by more experienced members who have also not really dealt with their problem themselves, sometimes. Despite this, most of the time, the answers are constructive and helpful.

I think this constructive culture and friendly way of dealing with each other is one of the reasons why OF is a wonderful and perhaps unique place...

OF had some bad experiences with people in the past who came here without introduction and only for appraising watches. I think this caused members to become more reluctant to provide information without knowing the intentions of the newcomer. That's why members often explain to newcomers to give a bit of context regarding the watch and their question. You know, the whole give and take community thing iso just taking...

Oh and don’t go with ‘my uncle left it to me’. That got old already.

Janice, I can see you have good intentions but unless you yourself intend to graciously field every noob first post price demand I would ease up on the membership a little. We are all happy to offer help but it grates when much of the time it’s either a veiled sales post or a lazy dealer doing the asking. Some first posts ring with truer intent than others, ‘what’s this worth’ is usually not a good sign if the main question.

I'm no lecoultre connaisseur (to think of it, I'm no connaisseur at all) but that looks like a steel chronograph lecoultre powered by the Valjoux 72 in a 35mm case? What are those things around the movement? Somekind of movement or caseback holders?

The VXN US Import stamp on the balance cock was assigned to Vacheron & Constantin, LeCoultre.

That's all I can offer regarding this one.

Forgive me, but it is kind of incongruous reading this which was posted after the original OP has asked another question in this thread. You lectured others about being nice to OP, but conspicuously ignored the opportunity to be nice to OP yourself.

I not trying to be mean, but it sticks out a bit. Particularly since you pull people up quite a bit on this issue. You did it to me in another thread.
They (janice and fred) do it to everyone they feel has wronged someone.

Nothing more fun than a condescending holier-than-thou poster.

There are also people that are non-native English here. What a difficult word... 😉
I think you will find that Mr Dedalus is not a native Englsihman either, but I am splitting hairs!

Look people, I'm not a mod so perhaps I'm talking out of turn, but I think all the points have been made long ago and this is just turning into a bitch-fest, so maybe everyone should back off now?
