Mercedes’ appeal still in play. Wonder if they’ll follow through…

They're building negotiating power for next season.

Sorry, that example makes no sense. Am I missing something? Under the current rules, lapped cars are allowed to pull away from the pack, do a lap and catch up with the pack at the back of the field. What possible difference could it make if they just dropped back to the end of the pack?

watch this.

Start at about 2 minutes.

The lapped cars have completed one less lap then the leader hence they are lapped. If they drop back and then come back and pass the leader they are in first. Or you unfairly penalize them and place them effectively 1 lap behind the car ahead of them.

Great video, but it has nothing to say about the point we are discussing.

To repeat, whether the lapped cars drop back or go once around to catch up, they are in the same position when for the restart. They can come back to pass the leader regardless of how they got to the back of the field.

The difference being that going forwards they can see what the cars they need to overtake through the field are doing as they weave to keep the tyres (luke)warm. Going back through the field they are relying on their mirrors. Anyone who has raced single-seaters will tell you the mirrors are close to as much use as teats on a bull.

You let the non-lapped car overtake lapped ones instead of asking the latter to "drop back". Problem solved.

Now; the problem by asking them to drop back and counting 1 lap more than what they did are:
- it creates a mess on the charts to calculate the time (nothing computers cannot solve, I agree)
- 1 lap less in the tyres, 1 more lap of fuel available, 1 lap less in the engine and the car in general. It allows the lapped driver to push a bit more than the others. And it protects them against last lap failure (Hi Mika! Hi Kimi!)
- the ultimate goal of the sport is to cover a predefined distance (from start line to finish line) in the shortest time. The results are based 1st on the distance covered, 2nd on the time to do it. How could a driver end before another one if he covered less distance?

And at the same time the unlapped are not permitted to overtake another unlapped under the safety-car. How to tell which is which? Perhaps teach all the drivers Morse code and have the rear lights flash -- --- ...- .. -. --. -... .- -.-. -.- .--. .-.. . .- ... . .--. .- ... ... 😉

Mercedes will back down as it's damaging to the sport and their Brand reputation. They have to be "seen" to be questioning the decisions made for the sake of the brand, sponsors, team and driver.... and F1. It's just a "thing" that they have to do. I expect a "warm congratulations" press release for Max and Red Bull from Mercedes F1 soon.

I doubt it. They just pulled out of the pre-ceremony prize giving gala. Declined the FIA champions photoshoot. No, this is going to get very bad.

Well, some news I think:

"The team cited the FIA's commitment to "a detailed analysis and clarification exercise" over what transpired over the final laps as key to dropping its appeal.

Mercedes said it "welcome the decision by the FIA to install a commission to thoroughly analyse what happened in Abu Dhabi and to improve the robustness of rules, governance and decision making in Formula 1. We also welcome that they have invited the teams and the drivers to take part"."

I think just in fairness, they wanted someone to at least look at what happened, and ensure such nonsense doesn't happen again, to anyone.

I think I mentioned earlier, Mercedes really wants SC regulations tightened up and not have Masi make it up as he goes to enhance the "spectacle".

MB's protest may be dropped, they have congratulated Max and Red Bull on their victory, MB may welcome an FIA investigation into what happened and no doubt they will be expecting Mr Masi to be sent packing as a result.

But, MB, well actually Toto, Mrs Toto and SLH are still allegedly very much sulking, they are not attending the FIA awards ceremony in Paris, no formal appearance from the team just some guy called James Allison going to pick up their constructors championship trophy.

And apparently there is no guarantee that SLH will be in a Mercedes F1 car in 2022, I wonder then if the rumours of Toto heading off to Formula E will become fact and maybe SLH will spend more time running his racing team rather than racing himself. If true I wonder where that leaves George Russell and SLH's possible replacement.

They could do that by remove clause 15 or whatever it is which gives the race controller some form of discretion. If that is taken away, the rules were actually pretty clear.

I also think that if they need to end under the safety car then so be it. I’d rather the right person got the win than a contrived mess like we had last weekend.

SLH will be back for sure. Do you think he’ll miss a chance at the record 8th title?

If a race looks as though it will end under a safety car could the race not be red flagged and then restarted once the incident is cleared. I'm not talking about the daft things that happen like Spa this year (should never had started) but this last Grand Prix is a good example, the race could have been stopped, gone to a grid and then we could have had 2 maybe 3 laps of racing, fresh tyres on both SLH and MV plus Carlos, it could have made for a nice little battle.

Maybe drop the SC if we are less than 10 laps from the end of the GP and go to a Red Flag, that allows a reset for everyone, then its a sprint to the finish off the line, and we all know what can happen at a restart.

Just a thought.

Yep, that would certainly be more satisfactory from a viewing perspective and if they make it a rule, great.
