Am far from an F1 expert.
But with the technology involved in the sport, why couldn't you red flag the race, then have all the drivers line up in the grid positions they found themselves in when the race was halted.

Then have the full remaining 5 lap race.
And just set each driver off at the same time gaps.
That has to be fairer right?

Just seems unfair that Lewis had all his time advantage, built up over the course of the race, eliminated due to a back marker crashing.

I hope you mean track positions. Otherwise the backmarkers that Hamilton had had to overtake (all with their own battles) would have been beamed out of the way for Verstappen, just as Masi's decisions did.

In any case they would have been blue flagged and they would have let Verstappen overtake them immediately.

If you do not want injustice then you have to let all the cars resume their race with the exact gaps that exist before the SC/red flag

I don't know the rules, just feel funny that race director(s) can re-assign positions to racing drivers without having to race for them.
Unlapping lapped drivers under safety car is common in all forms of auto racing.

It is done to preserve order.

to explain. If car A and B racing and separated by 5 seconds and first place is between them and a safety car is called then the safety car comes out in front of first place. Car B would then make its way to the back of the pack. Now car A will be over a minute behind car B as A would be stuck behind the safety car behind first place and B would be at the back of the train of cars.

@Just Livin

yes they can red flag a race which is an option. This does allow all cars to switch tires and all drivers line up in grid order.

Assuming all of the cars were lined up, this still would've given Lewis several car length lead.

Lulu has benefited from the safety car many times.

A safety car shouldn’t give any driver an advantage, it is used to control the cars whilst marshals deal with an incident on track, but in typical F1 fashion it has been turned into something else.

The problem with F1 and the cars is that cars cannot run comfortably run close behind another car meaning that close racing and overtaking is difficult, this in turn leads to processional racing which can be a touch boring.

So lapped cars are removed and the leading cars all grouped together then the safety car goes in and racing restarts with what F1 hopes will be a few laps of close racing, maybe an overtake or two, maybe even another incident, anything to spice up what may have been a processional race and keep us the spectator enthralled.

Me, I would have the lapped cars retained and the safety car do the job of protecting the marshals, yes the cars are much closer so we may get an incident or two as the back makers are passed. I would also close the pit lane so that any tyre changes or other work can only be carried out under green flag conditions.

There is no way this could be done under the rules.

that effectively subtract a lap from those cars which has a lot of repercussions.

Obviously, the rules would need to be changed. What are these repercussions?

Races have a required distance for them to be completed. What you proposed would effectively shorten the distance those cars would need to cover to complete the race. This has implications on fuel load, tire, engine use and durability...

In theory, if this happened as you proposed and lapped cars drop back into the natural position, they could in theory win the race while completing one less lap than 2nd place.

Red flag with the incident, Hamilton easily wins as he clearly had the fastest car.
Finish under a caution, I would have yawned and said: "yep F1"
I didn't have a dog in the hunt but my adrenaline was up on the last lap.

Looking forward to next season. New formula may help the slower teams. 😀 Then again, maybe not 🙁

What difference does it make in position if they drop back vs going all the way around? Zero.

Maybe a little more fuel at the end of the race?

Example 2 cars spin out and get locked together on lap 2 it takes 2 minutes to unwrap them and they rejoin the race which is under local yellow 2 lap down.

race resumes under full green for 2 laps. Another car crashed out and course goes under full course yellow with safety car.

In your plan those 2 cars which are currently passing people are in the middle of the pack but lapped. They drop to the back in positions 18 and 17 but 2 laps down. As they are great drivers they get to the front of the pack and are in first place and are able to win the race while completing 2 laps under the minimum race distance. Use this has happened where a back marker has won the race esp in rain.

see the problem?

Mercedes’ appeal still in play. Wonder if they’ll follow through…

I hope not, time to move on and think about the 2022 season.

Exactly. I wonder if they are going through the motions to show support for their driver but the chances of winning are slim so perhaps it would be better to quietly drop it. No one likes monotony, personally I'd love it if a third or fourth team became truly competitive next year and we had some real racing at the front. Mercedes are bound to still be up there with their limitless development budget, especially with G Russel on board but RB? We shall see.

Even if a referee blows a call you don't change the results after the fact. To reverse the results after a seven times world champion couldn't hold back the challenger for one final flying lap would be ludicrous. But stranger things have happened.

Sorry, that example makes no sense. Am I missing something? Under the current rules, lapped cars are allowed to pull away from the pack, do a lap and catch up with the pack at the back of the field. What possible difference could it make if they just dropped back to the end of the pack?
