How about the GP Indianapolis with only 6 cars "racing".::facepalm1::

I had completely forgotten about this debacle, thanks for reminding me, it was a bit of a farce wasn't it.

That’s where I think a lot of people are confused. There were no rules made up, only interpretation of the rules. The race director is in charge. The FIA will not rule against Masi. Years past there were draconian penalties for losing FIA appeals.

Even Masi disagrees with you

"That one (reason for the length of the safety car) was the fact that we had to, there's a requirement in the sporting regulations, to wave all lapped cars past," Masi said.

"I think from that point, it was position 6 onwards that was still running.

"So 10, 11 cars, that had to unlap themselves, and therefore the safety car period was a bit longer than what we would have normally expected."

That interview was from October, his actions of the most recent race has a different interpretation doesn’t it?

After a few days to digest this, I feel both Lewis and Max were deserving of the F1 title this year.

It was an exciting finale that could easily have been a procession after the first lap.

I would have preferred the reason it’s still in the news was not down to the results being manipulated by the Stewards, and I think that was the intention, but best laid plans…

I am sure that Masi has learnt a lesson, and being pressurised by team bosses during the decision making process is one change that will be reformed.

If you can ‘interpret’ rules and regulations in different ways on different dates then it makes a mockery of the sport.

Referee decides Football World Cup final will be decided by next goal wins in match with 2-1 score line due to new interpretation of the rules?

Yeah, imagine sitting in the crowd.

I guess that there was some social distancing 🙄.

Many years ago I went to lots of motor sport events as a trader, some of the F3 events and the supporting races were sparsely supported, especially those at the start of the season in March, at those races i'm sure the marshals outnumbered the crowd.

Yes and the right call, no matter what team you support you cannot have a situation whereby the decision made at the time of the race is changed in an office afterwards. Max did nothing wrong he simply took advantage of the situation he found himself in, how can that decision be changed post race?

.
How about Senna vs.Prost? Jean Marie Balestre did everything for Prost to win championship

Next year make it once your lapped your out of the race. That would make it easier. 👍

Best solution is to have the lapped cars drop back rather than going all the way around to catch up.

Which makes a mockery of racing, as I say you cannot change decisions post race unless one of the rivers has committed an infringement, in this instance neither Max or Lewis did anything wrong, they were told to race so they raced as best they could, Max crossed the line first.

If the race director has screwed up then fine he screwed up but he made a decision and the outcome of that decision has to be respected. Sure Toto can send the boys round to explain the rules from the MB perspective, then Christian can get his guys in there to put the RB POV across, but ultimately neither can change the result. The decision made at the time has to be respected otherwise F1 loses its credibility, not that it had much left anyway.

If the race had restarted with the back markers between Lewis and Max then Lewis would have won, no debate on that, but how often have we seen the lapped cars go past in these safety car situation, how often has the driver in second place benefitted from this action and won the race.

F1 has to get its house in order, maybe this debacle is the impetus it needs to sort itself out, we should be celebrating Max winning the championship instead we are debating whether his win counts and whether the result should be changed which would be totally wrong.

And for the record, I'm not Dutch I'm English so I should be supporting Lewis but on this I have to support the decision made by the race director and therefore its outcome. F1 however is a mess and needs to sort itself out, quickly.

Sorry but have to disagree, the lapped cars should stay where they are, the purpose of the safety car is to control the race so that the issue that has happened to cause the deployment of the SC can be cleared by the marshals, it shouldn't be there to affect the result, so if you are the leader and have a 5 car buffer over me then when SC is deployed when the race restarts you should still have that 5 car buffer, why should I benefit from having not having to overtake cars you have already passed?

For 2022 I would suggest that F1 keeps cars exactly as they are when the SC is deployed and also closes the pit lane at the same time, make the rule that ALL trips to the pit lane can only be done under green flag conditions, that keeps everything fair.

I used to go to the F3 races at Snetterton because I knew I would never again get so close to future World Champions -- or so cheaply. At one event I found I was standing next to JJ Lehto who was watching his protege Mika Häkkinen. Mika did all right later 😎

IMHO the lapped cars should stay where they are, and they should let Max pass them once the race restarts, as if the safety car were not deployed and they are observing the blue flag. I guess F1 wants to make the race more exciting by having the lapped cars going around, but in effect they are giving Max 12 free seconds or so that Lewis did earn.

The rules are however applicable for everyone equally, in theory.

P. S. I am not a race car driver by any stretch of imagination, but it seems to me that Max likes to dive inside corners and to brake very late in order to pass people, but Lewis kept giving him the option.

The grand finale to the season brought in a whole new breed of F1 watchers.

Which was something to be applauded by the season had and the great contribution of a sterling season from Max and Lewis.

But I sense that those same new viewers were left confused and short changed by the final events.

Just seems like a trick missed to expand the sport based on a lack of clarity in the final stages.

There is no way this could be done under the rules.

that effectively subtract a lap from those cars which has a lot of repercussions.

please read above, as well as there are no provisions for enforcement of blue flags during safety cars for the above reason.

Met a few of the drivers over the years at F3 events, in those days testing an F1 car wasn’t as restricted as it is now so you got the occasional test carried out and easy access to the drivers.

Given how much Fernando dislikes Lewis, he probably would've dived out of the way immediately to give Max a chance so no need to blue flag him.

I don't know the rules, just feel funny that race director(s) can re-assign positions to racing drivers without having to race for them.
