I don’t mind it, if it helps them follow closely and leads to more wheel to wheel like we’ve seen this year I’ll be very happy.

Watching qualifying now, much better performance by Danny Ric, I’m actually wondering if the McLarens can challenge the Mercedes here too, at the least I think Norris has pace on Bottas again

Don't forget this qualifying is for the Sprint race. The results of that race set the grid and count for pole position award.

And top 3 get 3, 2 and 1 points.

As long as Bottas has a Mercedes contract which might not be much longer I think. Very nice effort to have a Ferrari and an Aston behind him too.

Watching on Channel I've positively identified that gantry behind Bottas as the one carrying the start lights. So he is facing roughly west from the pits -- towards the sunset!

I must say the coverage on TV is lot better than the last times I followed F1 that way, But I think I'll do what seems to be a common practice of pictures on TV and commentary by BBC-R5/F1.com app. For Brits, rescan your DAB radio tomorrow afternoon and you should find BBC F1 between BBC 5L and BBC 5LSX. Continuous commentary -- no ad breaks 😗

All change! It’ll be interesting to see if the sprint race concept works. I see that Hamilton’s ‘pole’ from qualifying won’t actually count as an official pole position, as the grid is decided by the sprint race. Does that mean if you win the sprint race that counts as a pole position? Seems a bit odd, but if it shakes things up and brings better racing then I guess it’s all good.

Yes, the standings for the sprint race set the grid for the race on Sunday. In addition to that, the top 3 in the sprint race earn some points.

The Queen will get her tea after the race ends ^^

Perez really messed up. Mazespin never disappoints.
Yes, Mazespin likes to live up to his nickname. As for PER, he'll probably charge from the back, score some points and get DOTD. Unfortunately, PER has also made the strategy more difficult for RB again as it will be VER flying solo with HAM and BOT behind him.

It was definitely exciting in the first couple laps and proved to be quite unforgiving. I can say I was sitting on the edge of my seat in the beginning. Then, it plateaued and became a preview of tomorrow’s race. 17 laps felt too long as it allowed for large gaps to form and remain. I can understand how anything less than that wouldn’t be worth hosting, but something around 10 laps seems like it would hold the excitement. Long enough for something to form and short enough to prevent large gaps from forming and to be unforgiving enough to shake up the field. It was fun to watch though.

I like the idea, a short sprint race to sort out the grid for the main race but in reality it didn’t work. If Alonso with his knackered and worn out tyres can hold off faster cars on better tyres then there is something wrong.

With the soft tyres on his car Alonso should of, and did get going very quickly but as his tyres faded he should have been re-passed but such are the aerodynamics that it is virtually impossible for cars to race close to each other.

If F1 really wants to change then reverse grids must happen.

Good idea F1 but more work needed to make this ‘sprint’ work, but seeing more of the cars on the track and more action was very welcome.

Yes, reverse grids would certainly make it more interesting. Mazepin on ‘pole’ trying to fend off overtaking moves whilst simultaneously trying to avoid spinning off 😀. It would certainly be more interesting than Saturday’s generally mundane sprint race.

I don’t really mind that, tyres aside it was more Fernando’s positioning in that first lap that got him most of his places and he does it every race, finds half the guys around him napping and takes advantage of their cluelessness and that’s really their fault, his defending was pretty borderline dirty but that’s also to be expected given he’s in a slower car but has better race craft than nearly everyone on the grid.
