So can you please educate me.

Has a guide £800-1000 (plus 25% ish commission) the bezel is bent out of shape, it does not appear to be anywhere near good condition, likely expensive service needed and similar better ones on Chrono24 for around £1500.

I might have thought paying £500 would be a reasonable buy.

What am I missing?

Don't think you are missing anything - I don't follow the prices on these but yes that seems like a lo considering the damage. New bezel is going to run you about 150 pounds, plus the cost of a full service of course.
