In an attempt to reintroduce a little levity back into the conversation.

Judging by the statements from the Danish supporters who were at the match, the English supporters were attrocious. Families with young sons and daughters got yelled at before, during and after the game, they were spit on and bottles got thrown several times. A lot of kids were too scared to show their Danish national team jersey too.

Add to that the use of a laser pen (!?!) several times during the match and the boohing during the national anthem, I am appalled by the English football "culture".

There is no excuse for this sort of behaviour, no matter if football is coming home or not.

@Twocats - I was expecting to root for the English, but now I am not so certain. Let's see if the average IQ of the English football fan can be raised by 10-20 before the finals.

Well said. Something about (some) football (soccer) fans that turns me off. It’s like a step back to the “neanderthal” stage. We have crazy fans in Denmark as well but our national team fans are usually well behaved.

On a side note it’s good to see Lionel Messi, one of the greatest players of all time, finally win an international trophy - Argentina’s first Copa America win in 28 years

I'm really sorry to hear that some of the Denmark supporters were treated so badly. The booing of the national anthem was a disgrace as was the laser pen incident. I didn't see anything about threatening behaviour although I haven't been looking and these things have happened before.

I'm not sure that the people at Wembley for these games are a fair cross section of football fans in England. You don't have these issues at league games any more and some of the rivalries are intense.

We're still somewhat restricted in what we can do here and many people are not traveling so the "fans" are being drawn from a smaller pool and, possibly, they are not typical. Sadly, the great many fans who are supporting England are honest, law abiding and reasonable people but, the actions of a few will be what the world sees and remembers.

Let's hope for a good game without any trouble tonight👍. For me, it is too close to call.

Cheers, Chris

I'd echo this, as with lots of things, it's always the minority which spoil it for the rest of us.

Behaviour like booing other team's anthems or the cheer that greeted that poor German girl's appearance on the screen is deplorable and completely against the spirit of the game.

And most Brits wonder why we're almost universally hated!

The Sterling penalty against Denmark was a joke - and VAR, OMG. And how come England have played all their games except one at home??

My experience, having travelled widely, is that there is a lot of love for the U.K., and in some very surprising places.

Congrats to Italy - well deserved 👍
Both teams played well. Penalties are the least effective way of a well deserved outcome.

helps make up a bit for 3 years ago. Good to see them play more dynamically these days.

I’m very proud to be English tonight though, what a great performance.

First half was probably the best performance I’ve seen from England.
Italy were always going to find their feet.
Congrats to Italy.

This competition was possibly a year too early for a promising young England team.

The next World Cup could be an interesting prospect.

I just put a little interest bet for Croatia to win at 30/1. .... A touch on Italy too at 7/1. (edit: 8/1)

I've kinda mixed feelings (not really) A small personal win on Italy at 8/1. But a huge payout on them in my sports book (I'm a bookie). Italy were very, very well backed pre-tournament. By far the biggest payout. So the loss there will cost me, because my end of season bonus won't be as high.

That said, while I'm down a small chunk over-all, at least England didn't win. And that is priceless. 😜

I agree that the World Cup should be a phenomenal tournament, especially because it's being hosted in winter in a warm climate so we get to see players at the peak of their seasons rather than being totally knackered at the end of one. Clubs will moan about the inevitable injuries that will come from it. I expect clubs with many international players buying in extra coverage just in case.

Congrats Italy. Well played England.

A good match and in general no histrionics from either team so football won. England fan but no complaints and very proud

We'll have cleaned up on the 90 minutes markets. No one bets the draw for some reason. And as you know most soccer markets are 90 minutes. So there...😎

Seriously tho - my condolences. A tough beat. Heartbreaking to go out on penalties.

Well said. I've lived and worked in four European countries (including Germany and France neither of whom have been our friends forever) and countries in both North and South America. There is no general dislike of the Brits in any of these countries, that I saw.

Even on holidays in other countries, it is not something that is obvious, if that dislike even exists.

Congratulations to Italy, who were the best team in the tournament for me. I also worked there and they were very friendly to the Brits so, I still have good friends there who will rib me mercilessly now...

Cheers, Chris
